I know we have at least one Networking guy maybe more here in the MHTF. I have never had this much trouble before. One part of it is that is that the instructions or lack of left me not knowing that I needed to have both a wired and wireless connection to the new Cisco/Linksys E1000 wireless router. Then once I found out this little tid bit, I spent about half of a day not recognizing that my NIC built into my laptop has failed and is jabbering.  Ok, so I grab my wife's laptop and things start to work. Got up to the point that the Cisco connect program is running. Ok so I have an issue where I can not use any caps in the passphase for the WPA2 encryption. So, I change it and do the same for the laptop.

Anyway, seems that I am doing something wrong and I have spent two days now trying figure out what is the right way to skin this cat. And for those of you who have not set up their own network. Believe you me, there is only one way to skin these cats and you have to do it in a particular order or all shit breaks loose and sometimes you have to do a hard reset and start anew.

Please give an old man a hand. Seems that I have forgotten from lack of use of the old gray matter.

Tnx

Hi K1K,

Sometimes a short cut is the best option. I have my modem (DSL) and wireless router with 4 port switch right next to my flat screen and Blue Ray deck. So I just did the hard wire to the player. Now I do not have to worry about upper and lower case passphrase. And looks like the wife's Brother HL-3070CW printer has the protected WiFi auto set-up thing. Its just weird how when I changed the ID and passphrase in the router and then did it to her laptop. All connections where lost.  BTW I am closer to STL than KC, just a bit further west of STL.

Thanks GoGop, will head right over to that link. Thanks for the heads up.

I'm in st. Clair straight out 44. If you ever need help let me know.
Hardwire connections are more reliable and usually faster.

Thanks, I might very well need to take you up on the offer. I am just north of you in warrenton. I will more than likely have to wait till the weekend (Saturday) due to the wife running a small business from home via the internet. Wife saw a T.V. report how kiddie porn perverts are getting smart and they will go war driving and find a nice open system to download photos or up load them. Then when the FBI gets a hit and they start tracing back the route. They come a knocking on the poor smucks door and take their computer looking for evidence that someone at that house downloaded the kiddie porn.

I dont think there is much of a risk out here in the country, but ya never know for sure. And I do not want to go through the hassle of proving my innocence. In these days and this crime. Seems that your guilty and you will be raked over the coals. Plus the loss of property and in many cases your job. I have seen this happen without going to trial. So an ounce of prevention is better than being subjected to unwarranted attention.

Then too there are things like electronic banking and other personal information.

You are on the wrong side of the state or I would be happy to come out and get you up and going.
My setup is fairly simple, everything is hardwired except my laptop and other portable devices (ipad, phone, etc..) The access point is setup with WPA2, uses mac filtering (just to add an extra element) and I have done some fairly extensive site surveying, even with a 15dbi antenna detecting the AP is difficult at the fence line.

Thanks for the thoughts Noaccount.

I am about 70-80 feet from the road to my AP.

Ok, was just playing around with some simple stuff. Dont know if any of you have turned off you broadcasting beacon. I just adjusted mine from 100mS to 1000mS. my laptop remains connected, but the wife's disconnects. Went into her laptop setting and told it to connect even if it does not see a broadcast. That didnt work. So, I tried to find the network manually. Supplied the network name and that it is an open system. Seem that it squawked something about that network name is used. Just seems strange that I could not see anything different about the two laptops. But the one just does not like the beacon to be slowed down and the other does not seem to care.

I hate stupid problems like this that drive you nutz.
