I have been thinking about selling my AR and I was going to use a site like armslist so I can find someone around St. Louis, or maybe EE.

The question I have is there any guidelines I should follow to keep the transaction safe and legal for both parties.  I plan on getting a bill of sale even though its not necessary its a nice safety net just in case.  I know to use common sense but is there any common mistakes I should avoid?

Thanks in advance

Well technically as long as you are certain the buyer is legal then swapping goods for money is kosher. I have done it both ways a good professional bill of sale two copies or swap and go.

Or you could run to the local gun shop and let him transfer it to the buyer completely on the books. Helps you by getting it out of your name BUT might discourage a person wanting to buy privately just so he has a gun off the record.

If you are concerned about a buyer who is not eligible then require either a FFL transfer of proof of a CCW permit.

Otherwise a bill of sale shows you no longer own the gun.

Watch where you advertise the sale.

Whatever you decide to require, make sure you put that in your ad. Don't wait until you're face to face, and then start making the sale conditional.
