| I debating whether or not to build a Complete Ar Upper or Build it , Would it really be any cheaper than buying a complete one and what tools would I need? |
|
When I built my AR a few years ago I think I spent slightly more than buying it would have cost me, but the benefit is simple;
1) I know the rifle like the back of my hand, if there is a problem or a part i decide to replace it takes no time. 2) the rifle is setup exactly how I wanted it out of the box 3) if there are specific parts that I want that I can't get on a prebuilt you can save money buy not having to replace something you already paid for. This list can go on forever... As far as tools, standard set of tools (screw drivers and such), the lower can be put together with a set of roll pin punches an armorers tools is about the bare minimums in my opinion. If i were you I would take a look through this thread for more info. |

Most suppliers of Complete Uppers have many options available, my last upper no one makes anything like is so I built it.
I will generally BUILD an upper so I can get the parts I WANT not just what is available from a vendor. That way I don't have to choose something that I do not want to get something that I DO want... I just buy the parts and build it when I have them. |

give him a break he's either from Missouri. or not from 49 other states other than Missouri.
That said, its good experience to build one. I want a 30AR but I'm waiting to see if it becomes a popular cal and then if I can find a bbl in that cal otherwise I may go with the 6.8 |

I have built one and can say I will only do it again if it's an SBR or I use a 16" barrell. That silver sldier didn't want to stick to stainless steel. It was a pain in the ass!
All in all, for a plinker, I'd buy it. Precision.... build it. If you buy it for precision, you will just want to tear it down to true the face so might as well build. |
| I was planning to build my next one, but with prices where they are, and having exactly what I want readily available, I am going to buy it complete. I am going with the 14.5" bbl DD upper w/ 10" Lite handguards from Smartgunner.com. Its an amazing deal, that I cannot pass up. I just hope its still around when I get around to buying it. |
