I have been having some problems lately and want to share so that others might know what to look for if it happens to them. As some of you might know, DVT or Deep Vein Thrombosis is a very dangerous thing to deal with. Although clots below the knee are less so.
I have been dealing in the past month with some leg pain that has alternated between the left and right legs. Think that this was due to a nerve that might have been bruised from another issue. But all of a sudden my left leg is hurting to the point of gritting my teeth. Feels like the calf muscle is like a rock and hard to walk. Even the pads on my toes are tender. So, waiting through the weekend I went in to the emergency room this morning. They drew some blood and after hearing what I could tell them about what hurt. They did an ultrasound and looked at the blood flow out of my left leg. Tech told me I have two clots the length of my knee to ankle and one small one in a third vein. I am going to have to take two shots, one in morning and one in the evening. Also will have to take a blood thinner pill in the evening. Shots might be for a few days or a few weeks. They are just to get the clots to start to melt. Then I get to stop the shots. God knows I hate needles, ya I am a big baby when it comes to needles. If this was left untreated, I could have a stroke, heart attack or get one in the lungs. So, guys if your leg starts to hurt and it feels like your muscle is a rock. Get your ass into the emergency room. P.S. please ask the Lord to help me get over this without any incident. Thanks |

take care of yourself...... did you go to your family doc or specialist....... I think the general practice is what they are doing for you now...... what caused it? Compression stockings are also an option, which suck to wear this time of year.
If it propagates above the knee, make sure it is treated aggressively by someone who is competent. If it isn't it will cause the valves in the veins to become incompetent and not to function correctly, which leads to a lifetime of problems. DVT that is extensive can/will lead to PE( pulmonary embolism). They make devices that help prevent PE..... basically a filter that catches the clot before it travels to the lungs. PE are/can be fatal. Not a doctor but staying at Holiday Inn Express tonight.....kidding Marriot |

Thanks guys,
Well I have taken two does of Lovenox that is a clot buster of some sorts and after my 2nd does last night and some time this morning, the pain has dropped to just a mild problem. So I have not taken any pain pills this morning. So between the Lovenox and all of the prayers I am feeling much better today. A hardy thanks to all for you help. Not out of the woods but I can see that there is day light up ahead. KC, I think its one of those several factors caused it. I stopped smoking in Jan of this year. I have elevated fats, I am a bit over weight, and my work sometimes require me to repair machinery that I need to sit on the floor with my legs folded under me (no more will I do that). Thanks for all of your info and sure hope to stay away from the stockings, so I am going to change some things in my life to do so. |

Thanks everyone,
I have to go tomorrow around noon to get a blood test. This will determine how much longer I might have to take these shots of Lovenox. Mind you I hate needles. Lucky my wife has some experience to taking shots herself for allergies. So she has been giving me my shots. Swear I would die if I had to take insulin shots. I thank you for your kind words and thoughts / prayers. But just important is that I hope that one day if you start having the same problems, that my words come back to your memory and you get in and take care of yourself also. Thanks |
