Ok, so I have to go to Omaha for work this weekend.  I am going to have alot of down time so i was thinking of bringing a rifle or two and target practice.  i went to look around for a public range up there and found out there isn't one within 2 hr driving distance of omaha.  that totally sucks.  what is up with that?  i know we all bitch about the mdc ranges but at least we have them.

It's the same reason all the trees in Missouri lean to the Northwest.

having spent more time at Omaha than I care to remember

I agree with Robert

OTOH

They had a pretty cool Gun shop out on the SW side of town called Guns Unlimited
worth a look if you have time and if it is still there.

We would have zero public ranges but for the 1/8th cent sales tax and I can remember when the number was zero even with the tax.  On the other hand, I used to shoot into a clay pit tailings pile out in the woods at Reifsnider back in the 80's.  That would probably cause the Conservation agent to get his panties in a wad these days.

Totally off topic, but when I saw your thread, my mind read "Obama Ranges"  LOL

Now now Robert!!!   You know Husker envy doesn't look good on you.  LOL

As for ranges, there were several places that i shot at when i was living in Omaha.  There aren't any nice ranges like MDC has.  I really like the sales tax funding, and wish NE would emulate this.  But I don't care much for the MDC manned ranges that are one shot per several seconds or get yelled at.

I don't know if I could help out the OP, as they were located either up or down the Missouri river about 30 minutes from Omaha.

And,   in parting............   GO BIG RED

Don't know about any ranges but I can say their Cabelas makes ours look like K-mart.  I always hate how any chain of any kind, food, clothing, stuff always gets 1/2 assed when it comes to St. Louis.

Back on topic though, it's probably because there's all of 5 people living there and there's so much open ground they just all shoot on their property or someone they know.  No need for a real range like our surbuban sprawl.
