Does anyone know of a rear sight aperture that is marked with center lines (I'm thinking of using my calipers and just marking mine)?  I recently switched back to iron sights for my primary rear sights.  I can still shoot quite well with notch irons, but my skill at using a ghost ring is not very good anymore.  I figured out that I became WAY too dependent on an optic of some sort.  Other than deer season I'm switching back to irons as a primary sight.  I'm hoping that I can go to an appleseed event this fall and re-learn the art of the iron sight.

The rear sight is always going to be out of focus simply because your eye is very close to it.  Therefore I would wager that you'll never see those scribed lines.  A consistent cheek weld goes a long way towards more consistent shooting with iron sights.   I like the Nose-To-Charging-Handle (NTCH) position as it is a very consistent point of reference.

I just put a Magpul MBUS rear on my AK, I think it's too close to my face because even the small aperture is very large.  I did co-witness it with the mojo for a rough sight-in but haven't had time to hit the range yet.

Someone posted some mathematical proof about iron sights, something about how the blurred rear sight was able to center the front sight better than a sharp focus on both.  It was some kind of optical illusion dealing with refraction through the small hole, it magnified the perceived movement of the front sight so a small change in position looked like a larger change, so it was easier to align precisely or something like that.

I just need to get a 22lr kit and shoot more.
