Last night I joined the Bullet Hole Practical Shooting Club and shot my first USPSA match. Holy crap, that's a lot of fun. I can definitely see doing this pretty often. The guys at the BHPSC were great; very nice and helpful.
Now I feel kind of silly for waiting so long to try it out. |
It is addictive.
I spent many years worth of Friday nights there. When I last went they would hold a First Friday course on, you guessed it, the first Friday of each month. This was often a light or night sights needed course and often a surprise course as well with you not being allowed to see it until time for you to actually be the next shooter. They also held USPSA Classifiers on the 4th Friday of each month back then. The cool thing about the BHPSC groups was that race guns played right along Stock/carry style guns and even some antique revolvers. Back in the day the folks were very social and we'd go out for cheap food such as pizza afterward. Occasionally we'd go catch an action flick after the pizza too. Have fun. |
| I have always wanted to try and enter one of these comps but was a bit hesitant of being the newbie. Don't get me wrong! I have shot quite a bit during my days in the Corps and off and on in my civilian life. Now I am just a fireman that loves guns!!! I just might have to go and check this out since I already have a Bullet Hole membership. |

I'm just an engineer who likes to shoot and occasionally hunt, so there's no reason to feel hesitant. Mike, the Marine who helped us move my safe, went last night for the first time as well. He just watched, but he's ready to try it next Friday. So you should come check it out. There will be a couple familiar faces there as well. Everyone at the BHPSC is super nice and very helpful. I was almost getting too much help last night. I really can't wait to do it again next Friday. It was just a lot of fun. Edit: I should mention that the competition aspect really feels secondary. It's much more about having a safe, fun shoot. I'm sure there's some ribbing and joking when scores are released, but I'm just hoping to not come in last! |
| Hey Matt!!! I figured that was you; just couldn't remember!!! How's that safe going for you? Anyway, I was hoping it wasn't ultra-competitive; I mean I'm all for some good competition but some guys just take it a little too far! Glad to hear the atmosphere is all about having fun. |

The safe is great. Thanks again for all the help. On you're first night, they will give you a safety briefing, then take you to the range and go over the commands and have you do a little moving and shooting. Then, one of the more experienced guys will partner up with you for the night to give you tips and answer questions. You really should come and give it a go. Send me an email or give me a call if you have any questions. |

Also, try out the Higginsville and Pioneer USPSA matches. Details are posted here for the monthly matches.
I have a shot at getting a day shift at work, and if I do, I will start shooting the Friday night bullet hole matches (and maybe the Tuesday practices at Pioneer, and the pin shoots at crossfire....going to days is going to cost me a lot of money and free time! )

Once I get a little more comfortable and competent, I'll definitely be joining in. Good luck getting on days! Hopefully it comes with a raise, sounds like you'll need it! |
