to preface this a bit: I have been trying to get my wife to keep her pistol close to her in the house and to get her ccw. Shes a little weary of keeping it on her while im not around

I live in the northland in a really quiet neighborhood. at 8am this morning a loud crack goes off and sounds pretty damn close.

Now dont get me wrong, I am a big supporter of LEO's as the few that I know personally are great guys,   I know they have SOP's and that they cant respond to every call with lightning fast abilities.   but its been 15 mins since the call to 911 and we have yet to have an officer in the area.

I think ill use this as a teaching a exercise to show the wife and lil one you cant depend on someone else to save your butt. And urge her to get more self-defense, safety, and shoot time in.

ETA: 18 mins and one of the officers just stopped by to get some more info. Seems like they had a couple other calls about it also as 2 other cruisers just went by.

They take minutes to get there when you only have seconds to spare.

Good example to use.........Cops are not here to protect you, they're here to enforce laws. Usually that means trying to find someone and build evidence to prove what they did...its a rare occasion when police catch someone in the act, and that doesn't ensure the crime was even stopped!

What good is it for you if a cop gets there fast and catches the criminal as the knife enters your chest?

Much difference if a cop shows fast and catches a rapist half way thru the act?

How about, how much different is it when a cop shows up fast and brings a long black bag to carry a dirtbag away in???

They were showing all the women the Waldo rapist suspect is thought to have raped here and in Sacremento.....rounded out to be around 20-21 THAT THEY KNOW OF!  That's 20-21 women who relied on police for protection....unfortunately I don't think many have learned from this!

One dials 911to have the dirtbag's body removed from your property. The side effect is those pesty police officers show up and ask your attorney a bunch of silly questions while you keep quoting the 5th amendment.

You might be surprised to find out what kind of people live in your area, and what actually goes on.  How are the neighborhoods within a 15 minute drive of your house?  The police will almost never be able to respond fast enough if you are in danger.

I read someplace that the average 911 response time is about 4 min.

Completely depends on what city, call level, time of day, time of year......  How far can you drive in 4 minutes?  Factor in at least a minute for the calltaker to transfer it to the dispatcher to send an officer.....if one is available.

I constantly ask people when I respond to their home if they are protected.  I then advise them to consider doing so because we can't be in all places all the time.  When a call comes out, the call gets prioritized.  If there are no cars in service, then it will have to wait.  The district in the city is frequently out of cars.

For a noise call, that will be low on the totem pole.  For a home invasion, it gets to the top of the list, but you have to guess how far the cars are and if there are some in service.

The average response time for my area is around 30-45 minutes on B/E and a little longer on shots fired (usually, sometimes they are quicker).  I am in KC Northland.  Not condeming them, just saying a good example of how you have to be able to protect yourself.
You might try going to www.crimereports.com and tryping in your address. You might be suprised at how much crime you find around you, and then could pass that on to her to show her its worse than she thinks.
If you could get her to go to a defensive handgun class (you know like a DVC training type of deal) that may also help get her in the mindset and not fear carry as much.

I have been a cop for 16 years, I tell my wife and family to grab a gun, then the phone to dial 911.  We just can't be everywhere and it never fails if a hot call comes in we will be as far as possible away on another task. Murphy is a bastard!

We had a neighbor kid get hit by car last summer took 16 min for police to show up 21 for amblance.  I called 911 3 times from cell phone  and had another woman call from house phone.

The Police drove around looking before coming to talk to you...... If you live in KC,MO they drove lights and sirens to the call.

If someone calls 911 because they hear a shot all the Police are doing is looking for a body or signs of a disturbance. Talking to the calling party is of little importantance becuase you told 911 what you know and they told the officers.

All the Police do can do on a call for service is document what has already happened before 911 was called and arrest someone if they were dumb enough to stick around.

Well, it depends...

I ran our call log and for non-emergencies we are averaging 4 minutes; emergency/rush incidents are under 3 minutes for 2010.  NOTE:  that is only if there are cars "in service".  If we are dealing with baby mamma drama or something similar we can break free, but that sector car may have to drive a bit.

We exceed the "1 per 5000" minimum staffing promoted by the FeeBees so we enjoy a slightly faster response time.

And I'm all for responsible home protection, but as my Daddy use to say..."You hook em you cook em" so drag your own garbage out

Last time I called them I received a letter in the mail several days later stating that my call was very important to them, and the calls were being investigated in the order they were received.  God bless Clinton County Mo
