Are people really that dumb? Killing pigs all over the world due to a few cases of a new type of flu? There isnt even evidence that they pigs are transmitting the virus. Egyp is killing 300,000 pigs, every one in the country according to the article and they have had no cases. Or what is an arab country doing with pigs in the first place? They dont eat pork do they, isnt it against their religon?

Panic is irrational by nature. Therefore actions derived from panic will most likely be irrational. Pork is also prohibited by Islam; it isn't surprising that predominantly Islamic countries are willing to slaughter a lot of pigs on a whim. This could probably also be tied to cultural beliefs tied to fate based on religion.
The cultural reactions are obvious in SE Asia and Eastern Asia. They are well versed in the airborne virus scare. Hell they even evolved so far as to having fashionable masks!! http://cellar.org/2003/maskfashion.jpg That and people are just plain ignorant and often stupid and easily scared. |
