How well does this stuff hold up? some of the reviews on midways site say it isnt as hard as the makers claim and it scrapes off easily, and others claim its super. anybody here have a first hand account of it coming off easily or being even better than the claim?

I have used it quite a bit and never had a problem with it.  Just follow the instructions.  If its on a hand gun holster wear will show eventually.

duracoat is nothing more than glorified automotive paint, it will scratch easily and it will discolor from heat.  I have seen a few duracoat jobs done by individuals that look pretty good to start out, but they wear quickly and scratches will propogate to flaking.  I have also handled two proffessional duracoat jobs on POF rifles from DSA, they were digital camo and looked real nice when they were unfired, one mag dump had the barrel of the gun starting to discolor and a few mags later there were blisters and consistant discoloration all along the barrel.  For my money I wouldn't do anything but the heat cured polymers like KG Gunkote, Norrel's moly resin, or Ceracoat.  Duracoat is a waste of money in my opinion, I'd krylon stuff before I'd spend money on it.

Most if not all of these spray and bake finishes are good, Duracoat is Polane-T, I think it is from Sherwin Williams or so I am told... BUT this is just Rumor until someone from SW or Lauer will confirm that it is indeed which they will not. Polane is a Urethane, an especially durable Urethane material.

Most have their Devotes
I think Toothless Rooster uses Gunkote.

Cerrakote Haven't used it can't seem to get a price list or a sample of product that I can test out.

We use Norrell's Moly Resin at our shop, it has proven itself time and again and the mfr backs it up.
PREP PREP PREP if you don't prep right you will have problems.
If you apply it too thick you will have problems

with the Duracoat you will have to pay attention to the mixture, if you don't mix it right you will have problems...
PREP PREP PREP if you don't prep it right you will have problems
If you apply it too thick you will have problems.

Gunkote is an Aerosol, so you need no special equipment to spray it, and no mixing and it is a spray and bake as well.

Follow the instructions with any of these and you will be OK Rbthntr has tried a lot of these himself, might check with him on it.

So AFSOC, you're saying that proper prepping of the surface is kind of important?

No... Not at all... I just don't see where you get that?

This is why I said follow the instructions.  You have to use DuraHeat on a barrel.  I figured DSA employees had some training.  As far as DuraCoat being a SW product, I'll have to check on that.  I'm a painter and have used most Sherwin Williams products and have never encountered an epoxy that sets up that quick.  I'd smell a law suit if it wrecked a $4000 spray rig.
What are you planning on using it on?  I seem to be the only to reply who has ever used it.  I've sprayed left over DC on a hammer and its still going strong.
ETA:  I'm not saying DC is the best.  I personally haven't had a problem with it.  However I will probably try something else next time.

It will wear.  On a pistol you need to shoot it a little heavy on the parts that rub on the holster.  I have never had a firearm Ceracoated but a friend had his Glock done and it held up better.  I wish I've used Dura Bake so I could tell you it's better but as mentioned above anything baked on should do better for you.

I stopped by the local Sherwin Williams this morning.  Their chemical coatings division is now separate from them.  So who knows, DC could be Polane or even one of their military coatings.  The debate will go on.

from what I understand the guns I saw were DuraCoat demo guns for the booth at shot show 2008, so if you were to ever see a properly applied coating I would suspect that they would be it. And it was underwhelming.
