Showed up at Darin's bright and early Sunday morning. First thing we did was demill my Romy kit the rest of the way. It took me 2 hours with a punch, a drill, and a grinder to get the trigger guard taken off and un-rivited. He was able to complete the de-milling in roughly 5 minutes.
I brought two different flats. An AKBuilder & a NODAKSPUD. After looking at the two we decided to use the NODAKSPUD. We ran into the first snag...his electrically driven hydraulic press was not cooperating in the 35 degree weather. So, we had to resort to manual...VERY manual. We used a dead blow hammer. Now, this didn't produce the BEST looking receiver, but it did get it bent. I assured him that for my purposes, I have no interest in a "sell" quality AK. After finishing up the bending we welded on the rails. Next were the measuring, drilling and riveting of the front and rear trunnions. This involved a fair amount of trimming of the upper area of the receiver. The barrel was installed after the front trunion. More trimming and smoothing of the upper receiver for the carrier to smoothly operate and be removed/installed. The last step was heating and annealing the trigger hole, hammer hole, and the extractor.
With breaks, electrical problems, BS'ing, I was there for 4 hours. 30 minutes of that was spent bending the flat alone. It's amazing how hard it is to bend a 1mm thick piece of steel. I will be cleaning the thing up and getting it ready for parkerizing.

Darin is a great guy and a good friend. First time I met him we were both flat footing it at a gun show. He was carrying an AR and I was packing an AK. Talk about your role reversal.

What were the differences you saw between the the two flats that made you use the Nodak?
