Statement on reported robbery to the MU Police Department. On Sunday at approximately 3am April 20, 2008, the University Police Department received a report of a robbery that happened on Stankowski recreation complex running track. The male victim stated he was running on the track when three males assaulted him from behind and hit him on the right side of the face. The victim then fell to the ground. The victim also stated the suspects then took his I-Pod, cell phone, cash from his wallet, and a pocket knife. The victim described the suspects as three black males. One black male was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt. Another was described as wearing a white sweatshirt. One of the suspects had a hairstyle of cornrows. No further description of the suspects was given by the victim. There were no weapons displayed or threats made to the victim. The victim did not receive any medical attention. ( I have gotten 6 or so of these emails since I moved here a year ago, and they are only really sent when no one is caught / dont know who did it.) |

No typo, it was 3am. Also, he must have been running in cargo shorts, I dunno how he had a cell phone, pocket knife, wallet w/cash, and Ipod in a pair of gym shorts. But its college, people are up at weird times. Though running at 3am is silly, it isn't a crime. Hitting and robbing someone is equally wrong whether its at 3am or 3pm. I hope they catch the bastards. |

I agree it is not a crime to go out and take a jog / run at 3AM. But the world being what it is and what not. Lets just say the guy was an idiot. A smart person would not put them selfs at risk like he did. The good thing is that he was not permitly hurt or killed. The cash, Ipod, cell phone and knife can be replaced. I hope that this event will wise the guy up to what the real world is like. I hope that the cops catch the thugs before they cause someone some real grief. Max |

Your right, and this crime is fairly mild. in KC or STL this crime would go completely overlooked. The significance however, is that MANY students find themselves out and about at 3am, and so if he is an idiot, so are a good many of the students here. This occurred in a fairly centralized part of the campus. Crimes like these are crimes of opportunity, so most likely the jogger was attacked by fellow students. I'm not shocked, but it just sucks. |

I went to SLU and every year we'd get a crime report emailed to us from the head of DPS. It would only have a handful of small incidents on it.......BECAUSE it didn't show the crime that happened outside the gates. Anytime you were on a public sidewalk, crossing a public street, parking on the street, etc you were technically "off-campus." Even though you would have to walk and cross the street to get to lecture halls, dorms, garages, or to the shuttles, that crime wasn't included in the stats. And there was a LOT of it. Very little happened inside the gates, but they couldn't do anything about the crime between or outside the gates. Fuzzy math....... |
Well one must remember that Colleges have a tendency to be liberal. And liberals do not think that we should lock up criminals. That is till they get a taste of what it is like to be a victim of a criminal. Then they will scream "lock them up". We conservatives would have thrown the book at the criminal and have locked them up for a long time. How many years have the self protection people been shouting from the roof tops to avoid this and avoid that type of activity? How many years have they advocate going in numbers? How many times have they suggested that one must be aware of their surroundings? To take self defense classes? And I do not know the age of the victim, but if he was old enough, damn the campus policy, he should have been carrying. Seems that an Ipod, cellphone, wallet and knife was not to much. Then a little mouse gun would not have been much more. I will stand with my statement. He was an idiot and dumb ass liberal. Hey there are parts of different cities that I will not enter after dark. Why? Because records prove that those areas tend to be unsafe in my thinking. If one does certain activities that are unsafe, then be prepared to suffer the consequences. Does this gurantee that I will be safe in other areas? No, but it lessens the chance of me becoming a victim. I rather stack the odds in my favor than to enter areas that are known for crime and stack the odds in their favor. Someone mentioned that this was a crime of opportunity. And more than likely you are right. So, the dumb ass gave them an opportunity. Now aint that dumb. To play right into the hands of these criminals? |
Stankowski is well-lit and banked by large dorm complexes. It is very popular with the athletic crowd. It is not an "unsafe" area. A student shouldn't have to worry about getting mugged while running, even at 3 o'clock. Some people don't like being watched while exercising- it's uncomfortable for me to lift weights or run in front of more than a few people (I run the recreation trails around Columbia... less people and nicer scenery). Being a victim of a crime doesn't make you a liberal. This past Christmas I had two packages stolen in a week. I thought the first one hadn't been sent, but when the second went missing I clued in. I planted a 3rd empty package and it disappeared. So now I don't have things delivered to my apartment. Am I a liberal because UPS and USPS drop packages inside the entryway, partially-hidden, and certainly only noticeable to someone checking the area for Christmas deliveries? I suppose I should have skipped class and sat at my door with the 870 and done the conservative thing ![]() As for being alert- it definitely is wise to pay attention to surroundings. Sadly, especially when running, you can lose track of your area. It isn't uncommon to have gangs of 6 to 20 black youths walking around at night at Mizzou. I try to avoid them, but they are prevalent enough that sometimes you get used these gangs. I call them gangs because they are. MU recruits a lot of athletes, and invariably you get the gang mentality that comes with recruiting some of these people. I have been harassed by these groups- sometimes when they think you're not paying attention they'll whisper "cracker" or other racial slurs. I had one member come up to me at Wal-Mart and call me a bitch. I just kept walking and made sure my Kershaw was ready to deploy. |
