OK now that I know I'm approved for my C&R its time to get moving on the SBR. I already have the form1, FBI 258cards and citizenship forms. Who is good for the engraving, Sub_MG, Duke, any referrals? I know I got to goto Kinkos to get passport photos. Who is easier for finger prints, Jackson County or BSPD? I think I remember Sub_MG saying Jackson County signed off pretty easy? Man I really dropped the ball, I dont have stuff done, I wasnt expecting this until the end of this month. Heck I just sent in for the C&R about one week before Christmas! |

That's good news. If you get this done quick you may have your SBR ready for some spring shooting. I recall that there is a place in Lees Summit that will do engraving. I can't remember the name but I think someone will remember...ScotMO??? I used LSPD for finger prints since they are open longer and more often than JCSD. Check with BSPD to see what hours they are open for prints. The sign off has been easy for all of my customers at JCSD. |

The engraver is off 291 and 50 in Lees summit. I'm searching for his info as we speak. DBAR, Trent and sev others have used him w/excellent results. This is him: "Shawn" at Accu Laser Engraving Inc 101 Se 30th St, Lees Summit, MO 64082-2531, United States Accu Laser scottMO |

Both of my SBR lowers are CMMG manufactured SBR lowers. I went that route as no additional markings were required. It transfered on a form 4 instead of me making it on a form 1 and then having to mark it w/my info (costing me 30-50 more $). It was no additional cost to me, the lower is exactly the same as a non-sbr'd lower, it's just how it was "papered/logged". You might give it a thought. scottMO |
So is the form4 the same process as the 1 as far as CLEO sig. and all? |
|
Yep, same signatures, same 200.00 "tax", etc. If you make the SBR lower, it's on a form 1 and you are "technically" the manufacturer of the SBR and have to mark the lower w/your name city state (in addition to the other manufacturers normal markings). If you purchase a SBR lower from CMMG, they have manufacturered it and paperworked it as a SBR and it will transfer to you on a form 4. No additional markings required ($30-50 savings and your name/info isnt engraved on the rifle). I sent you an email w/some more details, etc. And keep the questions coming- These are all great questions that I/we have all asked b4 as the NFA process can be confusing at best. PS- We need an online hometown "chat" ![]() scottMO |
| I prefer going the Form4 route so I didn't have to get my lower engraved. If the day ever came that I want to sell it (over my dead body), the new owner doesn't have "my" name and city on it. CMMG was very helpful on the paperwork and it didn't cost me any extra besides the normal lower cost + tax stamp. |
Along those lines, maybe we should have list of everyone that uses some sort of IM client and doesn't mind giving out their screen name to fellow hometowners. It's best time, maybe tomorrow morning I'll start a thread about just that. |
I'd highly recommend NOT going to BSPD for prints. The guy that did mine was the "I know better than you" type and wouldn't fill out my forms properly. He insisted I put MY employers address on the cards, not his. Wasted 1 hour of my life and $5. Went to LSPD and everything went smooth and fast. |
You wouldn't believe the amount of back & forth arguing that occurs on one of the HK lists I frequent about whether you, as the builder or the rifle, actually need to engrave your name, city & state. ![]() Their argument being, as you hinted at, that they aren't the "manufacturer" of the receiver in question. Their argument is that HK (or the clone company) was the "manufacturer". I dunno about the rest of the guys and how they learned to interpret the English language, and out of fairness the BATF doesn't exactly make things as plain and understandable as they could, but I read the regs pretty plainly to state that I, the build of the SBR in question, do indeed need to engrave my info onto my weapon. I really don't wanna spend time dancing with Bubba in Cell Block C at Leavenworth. And when the time comes that I actually get down to brass tacks and get moving on these projects, I will most definitely get my weapons engraved.

That would work too. this would buy you a little time too if you needed it, and also possibly keep you from having to drive to CMMG to pick it up, when approved. scottMO |

Unless things have changed, the online forms are still acceptable. These are all computerized and look better than hand writing them Forms scottMO |
I've got the figer print cards, citizenship document and I will take care of filling out the front of the form 4 for you. These are all included with my NFA transfers. As Scott stated, I will use the online forms and make sure it is filled out correctly. |
My examiner has been pretty quick on all of my form 3's, so hope she is just as fast with the form 4. I have heard that the average form 4 time is 4-5 weeks from the date they cash your check or it goes pending. In the old days it could take up to 3 months and with some problem examiners that use to lose form it could take 6 months to a year. Things are much better now...especially if you have a good examiner.. |

All this talk about SBR has gotten to me. I would like to build as close to a M4 rifle (flattop) as I can get, atleast in semi-auto. Do I even need a SBR permit to build a M4 replica? So I take it this is what I need: SBR lower 14.5 inch barrel upper (is this measured with the flash hider in place or a 14.5 " barrel and then flash hider?) Guess I will get my C&R ap in the mail and go from there. I live in Boonville and plan on getting stuff from CMMG. Guess I need to give the sherrif a call and see how he feels on signing off on a SBR...or has anyone been down this road with him yet? |
You can do whatever turns you on. However, IMO it's not worth the hassle & expense to build a SBR for a 14.5" barrel + flash hider. When you add the flash hider, you're all but there to the 16" mark. You can either get a 14.7" barrel with a regular FH, or a 14.5 with a slightly extended FH. In either case, the FH is permanently attached so you have a 16" OAL, and you don't have to worry about the SBR paperwork. If I were to get an AR15 SBR, it would be a short one (like 11.5" or less), or would have a removable FH so I could install a silencer. Since we're in in MO, the silencer thing is a non-issue. So either build a short SBR, or get a 14.5 with a permanent FH and don't worry about it. If you're set on having a "correct" M4 lookalike, go ahead and pay the $200 for less than 2" difference in barrel length. My 2 cents. |
But as you said, even with the 14.7" M4 barrel, once you add a flash hider it is over 16" in length. So why not just get a good Phantom flash hider permanantly installed onto the 14.7" M4 barrel and be over the legal 16" minimum thereby avoiding the SBR hassles and cost? |
Cause it looks teh ghey....
|
|
If I get a lower SBR then later on I can always change to a smaller barreled upper. With the up coming elections it may be harder to optain a SBR if I wait. I have a question Do I need a C&R to be able to apply for a SBR permit?
I thought we could not have silencers here in MO ? |
That is what I meant: We're in MO, so we can't have silencers - it's a non-issue. |
Compared to what, a 14.5" M4 barrel with a flash hider on it? So M4's look ghey now? ![]() You're nutz! |
Now I'm a little confused because according to Jeff they dont do this ![]() |
