I hate poison ivy.  I have a delayed reaction to it, usually I don't even know I've picked it up until more than 24 hours after contact.  By which time I've slept in my bed, the poison ivy has gotten into my bedsheets, and through tossing and turning all night it has already spread EVERYWHERE.

Oh teh nooooooes!11

Luckily I'm not allergic to it yet.  I say yet because it's an acquired allergy.

And Sapper, now it's on your keyboard.  Don't touch your wanky either.

Well it's not necessarily acquired allergy.
Some people are born bothered by it, some people are not, those who are not, will become bothered some point.
The allergy is with everyone, some people it has zero effect, but with exposure it increases your likelyhood to become more allergic.  People who research PI often become so allergic to it, they have severe reactions, some requiring ER visits and hospitalizations.

It use to have no effect on me, now I get it, but it's not bad, like my GF gets it.

Studies have found that poison ivy is a plant greatly affected by global warming.
The plant grows more robust with greater CO2 levels, with these increased Co2 levels, the sap and allergen therein is also more robust.  So the more CO2 in the environment surrounding the plants, they more robust and potent they grow.

Eric, it's too late for Bob's Wanky.... he dun touched it....Prednisone is the best treatment for PI... Hydrocortisone works a little bit like the moment you put it on there, just like topical Benedryl, or even Benedryl tablets of caplets...

Man, that is a real bummer. Poison Ivy is a Delayed Type Hypersensitivity reaction, meaning that the onset of symptoms generally occur 24-72 hours after antigen exposure. Poison Ivy results in contact dermatitis, which is a fancy word for "inflammation of the skin after you contacted the offending toxin/antigen". As for a future word of advice...don't walk around at night while welding. By the way, did you remember to remove your welding mask?

While there are multiple types of DTH reactions, another one that is common is the TB skin test. Since it is delayed, the nurse cannot read your arm for another couple of days.

Hey Sapper...I know this doesn't apply to you since you got it so bad but...my wife got PI and I took her to the ambulatory care to get a shot, pills and cream.

Getting the shot is time sensitive, it only keeps it from spreading anyways.
I'm pretty sure you have to get it next day for it to be effective.
The best solution if you suspect you are exposed is to go home immediately and wash, use a soap that will break down oil,  dish soap if you have to. The sap containing the toxin is actual an oil and gets broke down by normal things that breakdown oil.  This may not keep you from getting irritated, but it will localize the reaction.
Dab2, did they give your wife zantac?
Altho its a stomach antacid, it's also a histamine blocker, and supposedly works well on PI.

When Mel got it bad a couple of years ago, she went to the Dr too late so they wouldn't give her the shot,
They prescribed her a cream, and zantac, and advised her about using soap next time she thought she got in some.

Hey BaNo...Sorry for the time delay...they gave my wife 'Prednisone'

Like I said, the best is Prednisone.... Had never heard that about Zantac though (Off to investigate!)
