AK Build Party RSVP thread

Ok guys, need to know whose going to be there for sure so I can get an idea of how many tables Im going to need to setup ect. so please post or email me if you will be in attendance along with any build experience you have any tools your willing to bring and if your willing to help the newer guys and Ill put you on the list and send you a map to the shop.  Please let me know either way as soon as possible as it will help me plan for this event.  To the guys that are new to building aks it would be helpful and beneifical to you if you would demill your kit proir to the party, what does demil mean? its when you remove all the cosmoline and grind down the rivets on the existing torched reciver stubs and trigger guard, and remove the stubs from the triunions, and the stubs from the trigger guard, now rember to save the stubs as theyll give you an idea of were to put your holes for your triunions in your new reciver.  Clear as mud?

The list:

Spudgunr – new to building aks
Nathan W. – udrive/welding/heat treating experience
KCGUNNER – brining a spot welder/experinced with prebuilt recivers
Jesse A – new to building aks
Brian A – new to building aks
blindman – 7.62 go and no go guages and a table top drill press
BrianLake – New to building ak`s and would like to help out in any way.
MOteggy – new to building aks

This NW Missourian is interested, but where is the build party to take place?

Further, I have not begun buying parts.  Could the esteemed and well-experienced builders offer a 'recipe' of what to buy, and perhaps even where to buy?

MUCH appreciated.   -leanman

im`s w/ links to vendors sent when choosing a rifle and flat be sure and get a flat that will work with your rifle

example: a polish underfolder wont work with a standard tapco flat, or a yugo underfolder cannot be built on a standard tapco flat both rifles have there own flats

see the difference:

tapco flat (works on your standerd fix stock ak`s like the romainian)

Polish under folder flat

Yugo underfolder:

Hope that helps :)

We should have the stuff to do the gas block there, Ive never done one but it looks fairly simple and strait forward.  As far as helping out it would be nice if a few guys wanted to just help keep an eye on everyone just to ensure that everyone (myself included lol) is working safely would hate to have the fun of a party like this ruined by an accident that having been said guys please be sure and bring and wear your eye protection.   Everyone one that has rsvp`ed has been sent maps via email or im`s if you havent got one for some reason just post and Ill resend it.

The more I think about it the more 10:00 am seems pretty late in the day so for any of you guys that are local or early risers Ill be at the shop at 8:00 a.m. I may still be setting stuff up at that point but if you wanna get a jump on your build feel free to do so.

So, uhh, once I grind off the rivets whats the best way to remove the receiver stubs? I'm limited on tools and I don't know what sort of condition the stubs need to come off in. Can I take a hammer to the sides and bend them off or do they need to stay in reasonable shape? I'm stopping for the night, but I've only got about 3 more rivet heads to do.

I don't think I'll be able to get the stuff off the front of the trigger guard (the little piece by the mag well that has 4 rivets in it), I don't have much in the way of pliers or vice grips or strength.

But, I'm ready to go and very excited.

The way I do it (may not be the right way lol) - I take my dremel and cut off wheel and cut line on the bottom of the reciver stub so the reciver stub is in 2 halves then use a pair of vice grips to get them the rest of the way off.

It doesnt really matter if you bend em up because they get flatened out anyway to give you some kind of idea on were to put the holes on your new receiver.

As far as the trigger guard rivets just get it as far as you can with what you have and Ill help you with the rest.

Ah, ok, thanks a bunch. I got it now, cutting it in half was definately the easy way. I didn't know if the reciever stub had to be intact or not, figured I'd ask before I go hacking away at stuff. I think I am now ready to go. I need to put everything into a box and tape it up so I cannot forget anything ;-)

Sorry guys...can't make it. Too much $hit going on here in Tulsa these days. I went ahead and sent my kit & receiver to Missouri Custom Armament to have them build it.

Have fun without me...maybe I can get together with some of you & burn some ammo this Summer...

I have purchased some press plates online to press off the FSB and gas block. If any one wants to start de-banning a bush hole bring it with you and you can use them too.

I am trying to get a threading die and tat (14mm LH) in time also but it doesn't look so good.

I think the build went great! Well, of course I do! I just got back to St. Charles from the build though. We went until about 9pm or so. We were mostly done around 8pm, there was a bit of tidying up and then we put the final touches on my gun (including assembling it, thanks guys!) since I had never built an AK. We then went to the range to test it out. So, I can now say I have fired 30 rounds through an ak for the first time in my life and it was out of a gun I built myself! I need to do a little bit more filing or put the gun in the mini mill here and I think it'll be all ready to go.

I also came out of this with no major war wounds, just 3 or 4 pretty minor ones. I do think it is about bedtime though. The 2.5 hour nap I took at the rest stop wont hold me over very well tomorrow.

Thanks again for the help guys! I definately wouldn't have gotten the gun done without it.

Yes it was ALOT of fun learned alot too.  kcgunner thanks for bringing your knowlege and your welder and thanks blindman for bringing your drill press it got put to some good use and brain thanks for bringing your table.  It was real nice meeting some new ppl with the same intrests!  I think things went pretty good brian got his gas block pressed off and put back on we bent quite a few flats did some heat treating welding rails ect. nobody got hurt and everyone got along really well.  All in all I had a great time and it was a good experince for the next time we do one of these, as I have a better idea of whats involved.  With in the next couple weeks we will be back in the shop for a day finishing up a couple of the local builds Ill keep everyone on here posted as to when it is so they can come if they want, dave there were 10 of us there total, as far as a time to stop by prolly th afternoon works best for me just ask for me up front.

My gun is still jamming, it looks like the bolt carrier comes up out of the rails when the bolt is all the way back. When it is all the way back it twists a bit and the left side comes out of the rails. I am not sure of the CAUSE of that, or the PROPER fix, but it looks to me as if putting a blackjack ak buffer in the reciever SHOULD solve the problem. It looks like it is 1/4" thick and keeps the carrier from going all the way back.

I'll post pictures when I get back to Indiana of what it is doing so maybe somebody can suggest a proper fix. In the mean time I may go ahead and order a blackjack buffer or try to figure out how to make my own.

Andrew,
Thanks for having the build party. I had a great time, and it looked like everyone else did as well.
If you decide to do it again, count me in!

Ok, I THINK I have my AK problems almost sorted out. I ground the top cover to where it will reliably go on. I have ground down the back of the magazine well to where a magazine will fit in there (we had been grinding down the magazine support, the problem we were having inserting the mag was actually from the back of the mag not going all the way in the mag well, I can live with a little bit of slop though because I took off more of the support myself thinking that was the problem).

Now, the issue I have left is the carrier catching on the rails. I found the root cause of the problem: When the hammer is caught by the sear it is up to where it touches the bolt when the bolt and carrier travel to the rear. This forces the bolt/carrier upwards. When the carrier reaches the rearmost of its travel it can come out of the rails. The upward force MAKES it come out of the rail on the left hand side (it is being pushed upwards on the left side more I believe due to the bolt shape). However, when the trigger is what is capturing the hammer instead of the sear the hammer is further down, out of the passline of the bolt, and thus has no upward force. It still CAN come out of the rails, but is much less likely with no upward force.

So, what is the solution to this? Well, I suppose I can hold down the trigger after every shot, but that doesn't seem like a very good plan. I belive a blackjack buffer will stop the carrier just short enough that it cannot come out of the rails. I have purchased two of them, we will see. I would prefer to solve the problem somehow, but I don't know exactly what can be done. Anybody have any suggestions from my description? It'd be handy if I could see a commercial AK to see how it works and goes together, but I don't know anybody with one.

Thanks,
Spud
