I need a gunsmith to do a barrel swap on a Smith and Wesson model 10 revolver. Someone in the Montgomery or Birmingham area would be ideal. If any of you guys have and suggestions on someone that does good work and you would trust with this kind of job please chime in.

I heard that there is a place north of Birmingham called Grabow that has a gunsmith.

Jim McCollough of McCollough Rifle Co. near Selma, Al. A little out of your area, but he does excellent work. Jim has done 2 custom rifles for me, and several repairs.

He's worked on a few of my guns over the years, ditto on the great work.

I'd call Smith and Wesson.

Last year, the extractor broke on my 25+ year old S&W model 4516.  Called Smith & Wesson to get a quote for the repair.  They told me to send it in, that they'd take a look, and give me an estimate.

They paid for shipping both ways, and fixed it under warranty.

Thanks for the responses. I'm definitely going to give McCullough a call. I'll try S&W while I'm at it.

Jim McCollough does good work and (at least the last time I went there) got the work done reasonably quickly.

However, the last time I went there - about 15 years ago - I took in a 91/30 ex-sniper Mosin-Nagant to be converted back to a sniper.  While drilling out the plug screws, the motor on his drill press went out.  So, he charged me for a replacement motor.  I thought about telling him to stuff it, but I wanted my rifle back, so I bit my tongue and paid it.  But, I swore I would never go back again, and I haven't.

I know several people who have had work done by Wayne Driver at Old Ridge Gun Repair in Prattville.  Everyone was satisfied with Wayne's work, including one friend who is very particular about gunsmithing work.

WTF???  How in the world did he justify sticking you with a motor burnout?

New shop in Leeds, they have done some nice work for me, Jacob (the gunsmith) has the formal education, training and knowledge to spin a revolver barrel and fit it correctly.

He said it was because he burned up his drill press motor drilling out the hard screws. I argued, but he wouldn't give it.  I could either pay the extra $50 he tacked on, or go home without my rifle.

And that's why I will never go back.

I've never taken him any of my guns, but I did end up with an old 1911 that had already been completely redone by him and the work was very good.
