Yay me! My son was accepted to LSU for the fall semester and I`,m in Dallas.

My request is for some of you guys that know the LSU area well to fill me in on the best (or worst) areas to look for housing.

Son is 22 and is seeking his second degree. He will not live "on campus" as a normal freshman would. I`ve been told that in Baton Rouge sometimes only a block or two makes all the difference as far as safety goes. He has his concealed handgun license but we don`t want to put him where he might have to use it on a crackhead.

Sadly, if you son wishes to live anywhere near campus, such as within walking distance, the campus is surrounded by "bad" element.  Unfortunately, that is just a fact of life with most universities in Louisiana.  :(

There's some decent housing off of State St. by the lakes depending on what you're looking to spend.

If you've got $$$, very nice areas can be had. But even then, the "bad" elements tend to drift around....

Give us a price range and that will pretty much tell us the areas to mention.

The area around campus is NOT a good place.
I visited a compound we had over there, and the gate had a "clicker" so we didn't have to leave the vehicle until we were inside.
Normal security is a chain and lock.
I had 4 "youts" charge my truck from the front porch of a house as I was passing by looking for said compound.

No, I did not make any of them a hood ornament.....

The area just off campus by the PMAC is a bad area, but other than that, everywhere else is good in my opinion, and I've been at LSU for the past three years. He can look for an apartment over on Burbank or Nicholson. They may not be in walking distance, but they'll definitely be in biking distance. Also, LSU runs the Tiger Trails bus system that is free for students, so he can definitely take advantage of that.
