| Been in madison for 4 months now and other then stopping at Bass Pro I haven't come across any gun stores. I have seen pawn shops that advertise guns but is that all there is? where are the mom/pop stores? |

Drive over to the west side of town to Clinton. Stop by Surplus City on Highway 80 (across from Walmart).
There are 2 buildings. Go into both. Both have guns. The one on the left also has an indoor range. It is owned by an individual. They are good people. And it's not familiy owned, but Academy Sports on Countyline Road has guns and ammo. I have never been able to buy anything there, Too many mall ninjas standing in line. |

Hmmmm. I did not know that. I have not been there in a while. I'll call them and see what the deal is.
Thanks for the list of shops guys! I went lastnight to surplus city to put some rounds though my new Sig but it was closed. Sign on the door had all the days crossed off except for Mondays so I'll call before i head out there again. Someone from Surplus City was posting on GlockTalk a year or two ago. |

+1 for academy they have good prices.
check out gold-n-gun on hwy 51 in ridgeland. the outfitter and discount mentioned above are also decent, ive found good deals at both. there is great southern in pearl watch what you buy there though, i have had a few bad dealings over the years on "consignment" guns. swaans off of old canton road behind books a million is a gunsmith shop with a small inventory for sale. i've seen some decent deals there but never bought from him. what central ms. needs is a more exotic gunshop, you know "not your daddy's gunshop" something bad ass..... 2D2C |

if you want a range, we have the one down in Byram, and the one at Turcotte in madison/canton area. i don't care for the surplus range. too expensive and gets really stuffy/hot in the bays, not to mention some of the crazies i've seen shooting there, AND the "you can't carry unless you're a cop" in the store policy. bleh.
i buy gun stuff from vanns and discount hunting. i like the people at discount a lot, and they can get whatever you need EXCEPT parts (lowers, uppers) for ar15s. tells me it's an insurance thing. that annoys me. |

Quoted: Surplus City wouldn't transfer an AK for me. Finding a decent FFL was proving difficult. Luckily I found what I wanted soon after at a gun show. I have a great FFL up here in Starkville though.if you want a range, we have the one down in Byram, and the one at Turcotte in madison/canton area. i don't care for the surplus range. too expensive and gets really stuffy/hot in the bays, not to mention some of the crazies i've seen shooting there, AND the "you can't carry unless you're a cop" in the store policy. bleh. i buy gun stuff from vanns and discount hunting. i like the people at discount a lot, and they can get whatever you need EXCEPT parts (lowers, uppers) for ar15s. tells me it's an insurance thing. that annoys me. |

Surplus City has always seemed like the typical gun shop "I'm doing you a favor by even talking to you" attitude. I try to dissuade people from going there. |
| I shot at surplus once. It was OK but expensive (maybe that explains why we were the only ones shooting on a Saturday afternoon?). I live new New Orleans but my parents live in Ridgeland. I'd like to go shoot w/ my dad once in a while though. Is there a decent (50 yd +) outdoor range near there? I've talked to magnolia but don't want to join an expensive range for going 2x a year. If I lived there it would be different... |

I agree, I can't stand them; and there prices on reloading components were insanely high when I went a couple years ago. I wonder if there is a good FFL that does transfers for a reasonable price in Jackson? |
| Not sure of gun shops in Jackson (I live in Birmingham) but there's a great outdoor range just south of town called Magnolia that's very nice. They hold the large IPSC state championship match there. I think its a membership only club but it is a great range you might want to check out. |

If I lived there it would be different... There is Turcotte range up north of Madison (just south of Canton, really, on Hwy 43) at the Reservoir. They have a range out to about 175 yards I think. You would both have to buy a Wildlife Management Area permit ($15) to shoot there though because it is run by the Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks. They have a nice pistol range too. The rifle range is usually pretty crowded, and they're only open Thurs-Sunday afternoons I think. That is the only other outdoor range I know of besides Magnolia in Byram. |

Magnolia is only $100 your first year IIRC; it's a great range (goes out to a full 300 yards). Maybe you should go shooting more often |
| For dealer transfers, check out Robert Bailey in Raymond (601 259-0174). He operates a small engine repair in addition to his hunting/fishing/bun brokerage business. His fee is $15 with no tax. He received a couple of purchases for me last year and it looks like I'm about to purchase another Black Rifle that I'm certain I'll do through him. |
