First off, hunting deer in AL sucks, majorly.

The season is really, really short.  Gun season, for example, only lasts from the Sat. before Thanksgiving to the end of Jan.; bow season starts one month earlier and goes to the same end of Jan.

Limits are ridiculous too: only 2 buck.  Per day.  For the 76 +/- days of the season.  Unless it's choice days, then it's only one buck and one doe per day.  Each day.  For the +/- 76 days of the season.

Cost of the hunting license is through the roof now; I think it's over $20 or so; robbery I tell you.

You can only hunt hogs 24/7/365, with the limit = oo  (infinity symbol)

Sucks, like I said, don't move here for the hunting.

What was the other question?

There are many public shooting ranges which are free if you have a hunting license, 3$ per car otherwise. Alot of private ranges also

If you have a good rifle that starts around .3--  or a pistol around .4--  or better then you should be fine, but it can be dangerous, might have to go a little out of the montgomery for a really big one, in my opinion though better than the best deer hunt your could ever imagine

I hunt deer with 30.06 but it is overkill here. I wouldn't feel undergunned using a .243, a friend of mine hunts deer in AL with a 243 and has never had one run more than 50yds. They don't get too big here unfortunately. Same group of people also have hogs on their land...They have a camera hooked up to a tv in their house...when they see the pigs come on the camera...open up the window...and let er rip. Gotten some big pigs this way 200lbs+ In mid to southern area of the state.

I have yet to hunt a hog because everything becomes about deer for most people after deer season starts....But they are pests and they are tough...Usually don't drop even from 30.06 from what I hear. They can run a good ways even if shot well.

Don't know anyone who has been wounded by hogs while hunting them. My cousin killed one with a knife even using dogs also....So not as bad as they are made out to be but I wouldn't take one on in hand to hand combat. Like most animals they will run before attacking you...

you should be pretty set, the terrain is very different here from where you're at, so the rule tends to be no matter what you hunt with *exception of shotguns* if you can see it, its in range....

AOWs are okay as well.

Let me know when you get here -- I work in Montgomery and we can get together for lunch one day, if you'd like, so I can give you the short course on local stores, restaurants, etc.

Milos is the best sweet tea you will ever have, but also the worst burgers as i hear......Doesn't matter their tea is so good they could sell dirt for everything else and theyd still stay in business!

Country style home for vacation or fulltime? has to be in Prattville area though?

My aunt and uncle have a house near lake guntersville. Really a very pretty area but it is still rural but not far at all from Huntsville.

I also love the southern part of the state...anywhere near the bay or gulf is great...But I might be biased as that's where I grew up....

I don't know what Milo's yall ate at but the ones that I've been to have a great burger, I love the fries and fried pie too. But you are right about the tea, they could serve raw chicken gizzards in tomato gravy and I would eat there just for the tea!

I live in Prattville right now. The schools are good here and the houses are nice. We have a Bass Pro Shop that opened last year and a new shopping center that is in the process of opening (Belk is open and Best Buy and Publix open next week). Depending on what neighborhood you are looking at I can get some pics of houses and stuff. Just send me a message.

Chilton County is not too bad if you are wanting to be able to get land too.  The northern parts of Autauga and Elmore Counties are also decent.  I would not go south, east, or west of Montgomery.  East Montgomery County isn't bad and the southern part of the county is actually very rural.  Really all depends on what you are wanting.  How much are you looking to spend.  Prices around the Marbury area (north Autauga and Elmore area) are not too badly overpriced.

Might check out www.alamls.com.  Used to be very current and is easier to check by location than the book is.  I don't live down in that area anymore, but I did for close to three years with work.  State finally decided to let me transfer back home about two years ago.

If you haven't located an apartment yet, you might check at Willow Ridge in Prattville.  They are pretty new.  The first phase was completed in the spring of '06.  Talk to the manager there (Denise) and tell her that her first courtesy officer recommended you.  It may help you a bit with her.  Willow Ridge is located on Old Farm Lane near to Cobbs Ford Rd.  It is all of one mile from the Bass Pro.  Depending on all of your hobbies that could be a good thing or a bad thing.

You should find plenty of house for the money in Prattville, I'm Jealous!  Wish I was buying now instead of 1.5 years ago....this is assuming you've got 20% down, perfect credit, and your mortgage payment isn't more than 15% of your monthly income right?...let me know if the rumors are true, it was said that only cash deals have been going down on houses.....

I work for the Power Company in Calera, about 45 minutes north of you, if you want to explore the big city of Birmingham, drop a line and I'll gladly give you the few pointers I've picked up...
