| Is it considered "improper" to sell a gun to a person here in Alabama if you have proof of residency (ID) then UPS the gun after receiving the money? Its not of of state but you never meet the person FTF. |
| As long as it is a long gun. It is against UPS/FedEx rules for a regular person to ship a handgun any other method than overnight. And Illegal to ship any firearms via USPS if you are not an FFL holder. So if its a handgun, get ready for a 40+ bill. Some assholes at UPS require you to show your FFL to ship a gun- might be an issue. |
Where does it states in the any government law that you have to ship a handgun overnight? IIRC, that is UPS and FedEx policy (aka parcel carrier's own damn policy) - not Federal or State law that requires one to ship overnight. To axl, I hope that "proof of residency" is a CCW permit to be on the safe side for you. I would be more comfortable dealing and shipping to the address on that permit, if it's a very clear and detail color scan just to cover my own rear; otherwise, FTF w/ CCW is best way for in state. |
I miss typed- you are required to pay for adult signature required with UPS and FedEx; and USPS will require you to sign a form to guns. Oh and FYI- I dont care if I had a signed letter from his mother saying he was an alright guy- I would never ship a gun to someone sight unseen. You could be violating Federal law by shipping a gun to someone not allowed to possess said weapon. I could mail you a copy of my room mate's CWP/ID yet be a felon. Some may think the risks could be a little high. |
I agree 100%, FTF w/ CCW is best way; either meet halfway or buyer drives to you. I was just answering the OP question and correcting some confusion with regard to shipping carrier differing opinions, depending on who working the counter that day. |
Glenn, I once sold an antique Mauser to a fellow down in LA & UPS still required my showing an FFL. I happened to have a copy of my C&R in the truck & that worked. Sometimes UPS makes up their own firearms laws. Rick |

I would never sell a gun of any kind to someone I didn't meet face-to-face unless it was through an FFL on his end, but that's a purely personal rule/preference. I also won't sell a firearm unless the buyer shows me an Alabama DL (if I don't already know them) and signs a receipt acknowledging the transfer of ownership... again, not a legal requirement in AL, just a personal rule. It has cost me one or two sales at gun shows over the years but it's never cost me a minute's sleep. |
