anyone ever converted a saiga in alabama or is good working with metal? i'm picking one up and want to get the pistol grip conversion done. i just don't want to spend $150 plus shipping to send it to redstick arms and wait for them to do it....

Yes, I've done a conversion on a .308 Saiga and a 7.62x39 Saiga.  Its a piece of cake.  The tools you need are a dremel or a drill, a flat head screwdriver, a hammer, some smaller nuts and bolts and all your conversion parts (ie. US made stuff, stock, pistol grip, fire control group).

There are a couple of different options for a bullet guide and attaching your trigger guard.

I would exercise caution if you decide to weld.  Welding the trigger guard in place is no problem, but welding a bullet guide can cause problems.

Here's a couple of pics.
