I traded guns for an 02 Honda 400ex (I know, guns..). I do have the title and I searched the vin #, it's never been stolen. The problem is that it was signed over to the second owner in 04 and he never titled or registered it (both Michigan). This is also not who I bought it from. How big a pain will it be to title and register in Indiana? I would really like to do it the right way, but it'll probably only ever see private land anyway.

Don't know if ATV's ever had a "title"" per se, More like a "certificate of origin". Since they were never intended to be used on paved roads there was no need for an actual title. Most only came with headlight and taillight so had equipment issues with putting them on the road anyway. Years ago I worked in a Motorcycle shop in KY and none of the ones we sold ever came with an actual title for the reasons I listed,  a certificate of ownership with the serial number on it for insurance purposes in case it was stolen it could be recovered, even stated that it was NOT a title on the cert.. Not sure how it works here in IN. YMMV.

Its not too big of an issue since its an 02. They changed the titling regulations in 04. Yes most ATVs come with a certificate of orgin, just like trailers, they are expected to be titled in the owners state. I was able to get an 04 arctic cat registered last year on a signed certificate of origin from the previous owner that was never previously titled. If one office says no odds are the next closest will probably say yes....

They have to be titled 5 model years back.  So no need to title this one.

To register it all you need is a bill of sale and it can be hand written and signed.  Send that with the $30 to DNR for the registration stickers.  http://www.in.gov/dnr/outdoor/4278.htm

Title is with BMV and reg is with DNR.

I titled an 03 with a bill of sale in Indiana. Bill of sale was from an auction house. Not a big deal, they mainly just wanted their money.

I actually ran into this with a UTV last week.

The BMV said I had to have to police out to fill out a forum, and run the VIN and I would be GTG

Remember you do not need a title with BMV to register it with DNR.
