Use safety equipment in the woods, it's not worth the risk... unless you're a lonely old man with a death wish and you want to die sooner rather than later you have too much to lose to not use some sort of harness 100% of the time your feet aren't on the ground. This guy lost it all. Will never get to celebrate his 1 year anniversary, will never see his unborn child, and the family he was starting is now without a father... Very sad... |

I was just on my here to post that too. Quite tragic. One of my WNY high school friends was seriously injured in a tree stand fall years ago. |

I know Tim personally... so this hits close to home... really terrible thing to happen to a great guy |

I read that yesterday or the day before, and was saddened to hear that the guy suffered a life-altering injury and that he elected to have life support removed rather than subject his family to the constant care that he would have required for life. Prayers for all involved.
What is shocking is that I read that he fell from a ladder stand, which many feel is the safest type of deer stand available. I'd venture to guess that very few hunters who use ladder stands even bother with a safety harness, especially when you consider the astronomical number of hunters who fail to wear one in the more dangerous climbing or lock-on stands. |

I think that's the problem; ladder stands are seen as safer even though I don't think they are any safer than any other stand. The time something is most likely to happen is during the transition from the ladder to the platform area. |
| I worked a death investigation a few years ago with the same thing. An older man fell from a tree stand on his head and died. He had no safety harness and I remember it being about the tallest tree stand that I had ever seen. I didn't quite understand the reasoning for it being that high. Sad for the families. |
