I received the following email.  How would you respond?  Is this normal?  I have never had this happen.

We are conducting an internal audit and would like to verify serial numbers for the 2 lowers that you purchased in May of 2008. If you could either reply to this email or call me back @   I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you in advance

Well, right now I do not want to say who it was from.  It was from a forum vendor.  It just seems odd?

I'm guessing someone is having a problem with their books. I would call them at a number that you know is them (from your original reciept) and see what they ask.
If your tinfoil is tight, you could tell them to get bent and make some counteraccusations just to be safe

From someone you bought something from, I would call the number and speak to the owner. Im guessing they lost some guns

No reason not to help them out.

I would ignore them.

You have no obligation to give them any info.

Thats the city attitude that I encounter here in Indy every day. No one cares about anyone but number 1.

If you have no hard feelings with the dealer, why would you not call them back?

Let them give you the serial numbers they have and let them know if they match what you have or not.

What is the big deal?

Agreed, its not like you are disclosing anything they shouldn't already know.

If you did business with this person and had a pleasant experience I see no reason not to lend a hand. I think the tinfoil hat can sit this one out. nothing to worry about if you ask me.

If you bought 2 from them then that answers their question.  They may have had some guns go out the door that were written up as someone else buying them.

This! As long as they say "we want to verify xbf322 and esf533 were sold to you, yes or no?" Then you are fine. let them initaiate the numbers to insure security. Sounds like they have a numbers snafu.

I would say they were audited and found some problems with their books; there would be no harm in calling them up and asking to speak to the owner about the matter.
