I ordered a lower online (coleman tyler) and had it shipped to a local FFL in Mishawaka.  When I last checked with my local shop and the online store all was GTG so it was shipped.  Then I get a call saying my local shop refused the shipment and sent it back to the online store.  Has this ever happened to anybody else and is there a good reason as to why this may have happened?  I am pretty upset and I don't want to go into the shop without some understanding.  (this is my first FFL transfer experience)

Which FFL was it?  Did the FFL send a copy with the package?  It could have been that something was not invoiced correctly.  Why don't you ask the FFL.

Midwest goons?

yeah, midwest.  I'm going in there tomorrow but I wanted some possible reasoning before I go in there.  Not sure about what was sent with the lower, and I have not heard bad things about Coleman Tyler (in fact they were quite patient with me and setting up the FFL transfer) so I'm assuming they know what they are doing.... but who knows.

It seems that they do not want business from ordinary guys.  If you don't have a badge, they don't care about you.  There are other places to go to.

I had similar problems with Midwest Gun Exchange too. They don't make enough on transfers, so they don't really want to do any. They charge $25/transfer which is excessive. Do what I did, check class3sales.com , a nice small shop in New Carlisle. They charge $15 and are easy to work with. They have indoor range and also charge $50 for class 3 transfers.

I'll check them out! Thanks for your replies.  Is this something where I am going to have to expect to eat the cost of shipping for a second try? Or get midwest to pay for it if it was their mistake?

Enough said.  Yet another reason not to do bussiness with them.  Stick to Class III or use the guy I do Kaker out on Olive.

Steve at Granger guns is a decent guy, he charges $20 for transfers. He also has some great prices on Glocks. I picked up a NIB G19 with 2 15 round mags for $459. The ZX guys in Goshen are pretty cool to deal with also and usually have DPMS stripped lowers for $99.

Another great shop is Tomlinson's in Churubusco. Not a lot of black rifles but some fine pistols.

I also do my transfers at Tomlinsons. Howard and Dan are both real nice guys. IIRC my last transfer with them cost me $20

Sorry, still waiting on a response from Midwest.  The guy I've been working with (Dave) has been really good and helpful (really knows his stuff on AR's and is all about building a good AR not just settling for only the parts they sell).  Actually he's the only reason I haven't started looking for another shop... yet.  He told me that when the original shipment arrived that it was hand written so the person receiving the package didn't open it to find the possible FFL license from Coleman Tyler.  Dave is contacting Coleman Tyler to get it arranged to ship again and to make sure it comes through this time.  Ugh, the joys we face for the love of a good AR.  I'll keep updating when I get more info.

Thanks for all of the responses and the list of local places.  I'll check them out.
My wife and I are really looking for a nice outdoor range soon, so any suggestions there would also be great. (I'll check the sticky on that one as well)

Update:

It came in today! I guess it all came down to Coleman Tyler not faxing their FFL to MGE before they shipped it?  I dunno if that's a valid excuse... either way, it all got taken care of and I got it today! WOOT!

Lastly, MGE in Mishawaka is having a liquidation sale before they move and most of the prices seem pretty good.  Bad service or not, I did take advantage of some good prices

So, does that mean that Midwest won't accept a firearm from a non-FFL?  Snobs.

I got a flyer in the mail from them.  They are going to be moving into the old Pep Boys on Grape.

I got their flyer too, and I'm gonna go by there later today just to see if anything catches my eye.

That's what I was wondering, needless to say I'm not going through that one again with them.

I went to MWgoons today, it was nothing but elbows and assholes. Not nearly enough staff. One guy doing all the 4473s.

Several people looked pretty pissed when they left the store, empty handed.

It's about what I expected.

I swore to myself that I am done with Midwest Gun Exchange when they called ATF on a friend of mine who was stocking on ammo and was buying 2-3K at a time. They gave all copies of the receipts to ATF too. What an asshats ...

Yikes! hmmm, I wonder...

how many guns and how much ammo is too much to have around the house?
9/14/2008 7:27:22 AM EDT
[#24]
I don't think there are restrictions on how many guns or ammo a person can have in his house.

Midwest is very friendly and too cooperative with the ATF and the local cops, if you say something or do something they think its suspicious, they will call the ATF on you and they will give them all the receipts too. That tells you how much they care about their customers.

Also there is a short guy with pony tail that used to work there part time (he might still work there). Guess what, when ATF raided my friends house, I was there and saw the same guy (their employee) with ATF jacket showing a badge. Makes you wonder ...

Deal with them on your own risk ...
