Has anyone shot an IDPA match?? Where/when are the local matches?? I'm interested in trying it out for no other reason than honing my skills. I'd like to watch a match or two before I jump in and particiapate. -JW- |

I've shot a few. Here are some clubs that offer IDPA matches: Wildcat Valley Rifle & Pistol Club - near Brookston, IN which is just a little north of West Lafayette. Matches on 2nd Saturday. North Porter County Conservation Club - near Valparaiso Red Brush Rifle Range - Evansville area You can also find affiliated clubs through the IDPA web site's club listing. Here it is for IDPA clubs in Indiana. You might also consider trying some USPSA pistol matches, as the rules are far less restrictive. You can shoot the matches the way you would shoot an IDPA match if you choose. That's the key: it's your choice to shoot the way you want. Some USPSA clubs in Indiana: WVPPS - Near Terre Haute on 3rd Sunday ChIPS - at the Atlanta Conservation Club on the north edge of Hamilton Co. on 2nd Sunday NPCCC - Near Valpo South Central - near Seymour on 1st Sunday FWAPS - near Ft. Wayne on 3rd Sunday There is also a club near Angola, IN, but I don't have a URL. If you live near there, you should be able to find it through USPSA using the club finder. I think they shoot on the first Sunday. |

I will offer a bit of info from my own experiances. I shot IDPA in the past for several years. Loved it. Still like it. However Mr. Rhino_ converted me to the dark side of USPSA/IPSC. The reason being exactly what he described, you get to shoot it the way you want and its a lot higher round count. Basicly a shit load more fun. I DO like IDPA still I just only have so much time and will shoot IPSC first. If IDPA was the only game around I would do it gladly. If anyone tries to bring up the "tactical" part of it just remember that anytime you use a timer its just a game. They are both fun and try both to decide yourself. Just WAIT untill you discover 3 Gun or Multi-Gun, I will let Rhino explain the diff between those 2. One more thing, dont just go to watch. You will be kicking yourself in the ass for not bringing your pistol and just shooting. Trust me. Bring a pistol, holster (a kydex type is common) at least 3 mags for IDPA, a few more if you have them helps. A mag puch is preferred but my first IDPA I was pulling mags out of my back pocket. Eye protection, ear protection, and for IDPA you need a cover garment similar to a photographers jacket or even a big Hawian shirt works. AND about 100 rounds. For IPSC Id bring at least 4 or 5, 8 round mags for 45ACP and about 150 rounds just in case. If you have any 10 round mags you can use them in IPSC but not IDPA. Then you will shortly be addictied and turn into a "gear queer". Correct Rhino? |

You are right on the money, Mr. Tnek! My work here is done! jwk ... the similarities between IDPA and USPSA/IPSC are far more numerous than the differences. The former just has more restrictive rules and will generally require shooting from concealment. You'll need more magazines (and pouches) for the latter, but the rest will be good to go. |
