I'm interested in taking a tactical carbine course and was wondering if there are any in the area (Mid-Atlantic Area) that you all know of or would recommend.  I know they very in length of days but I'm looking for a good class.  Would even consider traveling further if it was worth it.  Thanks.

I looked at going to the fire institute in PA a while ago but never made it up there.

www.fireinstitute.org/

Forest, a poster here, has been there and gave the place pretty good reviews.  Last I was thinking about going, the range that was hosting the classes closed down.  It now looks like they've moved locations.

I keep saying I'm going to go.  The classes used to be Fri, Sat, Sun, but now are Sat, Sun, Mon.  That just doesn't work for me at all.

I'd definately recommend the FIRE Institute.  PeteG and TonyF post in the Training section (under Arms&Tactics) and are involved with the organization.

Several ARFcommers have been out there for courses besides me, Fight4YourRights, Ops, NSW, Aimless, SP10, and even EdSr has taken FIREs Carbine 1.

I've taken four of their courses and will be back for more.

Handguns (fully loaded) will be carried by all students during all the instruction.  We will accept any suitable, serious pistol or revolver, from nearly any reputable manufacturer, in 380Auto or larger caliber.  You'll need a holster and spare magazine carrier suitable for continuous, daily concealment, unless you are in uniform and opt for open carry

Fighting knives, and flashlights will be carried also.  Backup pistols (concealed) are recommended.  Spare pistol  and rifle magazines may be carried in any manner you wish. You'll need six hundred rounds of rifle ammunition and four hundred rounds of pistol ammunition.

We will accept most medium and heavy, autoloading, military rifles in 7.62x51 (308), 7.62x39 (30 Soviet), M1 Carbine, 30-06, or 5.56x45 (223) caliber.  Pistol-cartridge-firing carbines, such as the H&K MP-5 and the Beretta Storm, are acceptable.  We will not accept rimfire rifles.  Bolt guns, lever actions, and other, low-capacity, sporting rifles are not recommended.  Slings are mandatory, as we will be running a hot range.  High-magnification, high profile, close-eye-relief scopes are not suitable for our purposes.  Good, iron sights are recommended.  Low-power, low-profile, forward-mounted scopes and fighting optics (EOTech, Aimpoint, ACOG) are acceptable and are also recommended.  The best rifle to bring is a military autoloader.  Students should be advised that their rifles will see some strenuous, rugged use and may get scratched up a bit.  Pretty guns are best left at home.  You will need six-hundred rounds of rifle ammunition.  We specifically do NOT recommend any ammunition manufactured by Norinco, Sellior & Bellot, or Wolf.

The course will be outdoors and will entail some physical activity, so you will need to dress appropriately (long pants, long-sleeve shirt, sturdy shoes).  You may get dirty, so wear something heavy-duty but inexpensive.  Don't show up in sweat pants or shorts.  Bring along an old sports coat or jacket, so that you will able to draw handguns from concealment.  An exception is made for police officers and military students who want to work out of their uniform, duty gear.

All students must bring their own safety equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, and a baseball/military cap.

Finally, you will need a gun case, so that you can safely carry your rifle on and off the range.  Your handguns may be carried onto and off the range in a holster (fully loaded and concealed, unless you're in uniform and opt for open carry) or in a gun rug or box.  All longarms must be carried on and off the range in cases.

Our new training text, The Farnam Method of Defensive Handgunning, Second Edition is now available from DTI Publications, as is The Farnam Method of Defensive Rifle and Shotgun Shooting, and Guns and Warriors, Volume 1, and  you may contact them at 303 443 9817.  Vicki’s new books, Training Women to Shoot, a Law Enforcement Instructor’s Guide and Women Learning to Shoot are now available also.
