Thinking about moving from VA to maryland to work at Ft Meade....tell me about annapolis....hosehold 6, likes the town and it seems preatty livable compared with northern virginia vin |
|
annapolis is a nice place to visit. but it is maryland, ie f$%^ked up gun laws. also down town annapolis parking sucks, houses are pricey, everyone are snobs. stay in virginia eta finished reading.... fort meade has some decently priced property locally, a lot of older ( 50 YO) houses on 3 to 5 acre lots for the same price ( 500 k to 800 k )you can buy a new house on a 1//4 acre lot in annapolis. they dont come up often but when they do they are worth it |

Annapolis proper is really two towns. One is the sailboat, uber-wealthy crowd and the other is the drug, gang related set. Outside of the city limits there are some great communities on the Broadneck peninsula....Arnold is at one end of the peninsula and Cape St Claire and Revell Downs on the other. There are plenty of houses in those areas that are very affordable, low crime rate and these are THE best schools in AA County. I'm a school teacher and my wife is active duty military so we are by no means rich, but we have a very nice house in Cape St Claire. The area around Ft Meade sucks. Lots of drugs and crime, the schools are terrible too. The only good thing about living over there would be being close to a gun range. |
| Annapolis is "outgrowing" the ritzy appeal it once had. There are bad parts, and I think they may be spreading. Case in point, someone started their own shooting range in the food court at the Annapolis mall last night. I would take the money and look elsewhere. Just my 2 cents... |

Maryland sucks in general. The crime rate is high, taxes are high, property values are outrageous (and even more so in AA County), and the political climate is dominated by liberal interests in the high population DC and Baltimore areas. There are conservative areas in places like the Eastern Shore and Western and Northern Maryland, however they pretty much get no voice in Annapolis because so much of the population is centered around the urban centers. We also have a collection of assorted arrogant left-wing boobs coming into the governor's and AG's office who absolutely despise your second amendment rights. With the BRAC process, Anne Arundel County is going to be getting 55-70K new residents in the next several years, it is going to be packed, especially around Ft. Meade. AA County does have great schools and teachers, the best anywhere, I wholeheartedly agree with that. There is still not a public high school anywhere in AA County I would send my kids to though. Not because of the teachers or staff, but because of the general environment created by some of the other kids. We're looking in southern PA for some property, and I can't wait to move. Just my two cents. |

thanks vin sounds like an alram system and a well trained hound would be required....are there any conservative counties south of baltimore or do I have to cross the big bridge to get to some sanity??? |
There are plenty in Southern MD, Charles, Calvert, St Mary's, even Anne Arundel is fairly conservative IMHO, always tends to go somewhat Republican in elections. The problem is though the county doesn't really matter, its the liberal state govt. which screws you, the law-abiding taxpayer, over. And the state legislature is controlled by the Lexus Liberals in Howard and Montgomery and the entitlement lobby in Baltimore CIty and PG County, that's where the most people are so they get the majority representation. |
| the area i am talking about as having some nice property is north of 175 and both sides of rte 3, its not really odenton but close. if anyone drives down 32 a lot they will know the horse farm on the north side of rte 32 a few miles before rte 3 ...in that area. |

Maryland does suck. First chance I get I am moving out of this state. I always hoped things would get better here but the last election proves they won't. Taxes are high, the police would rather arrest an honest gun-owner than a gangbanger, crime is high (violent crime rate in MD is more than twice that in VA), traffic is awful, houses cost a lot, and public schools are pretty lousy unless you buy into a super rich area. | I moved to Maryland from the Communist state of New Jersey. I thought I'd be "free" here in Maryland. Guess I should have headed a little further south to VA. MAryland gun laws have generally gone down the shitter over the past 10 years. I have a feeling they are about to get worse. |
Yes, you can own any AR-15 rifle, just no AR pistols, or Tec-9's, or Uzi pistols, and similar . They are considered "assault pistols" (I guess as opposed to those non-assault pistols ) and you cannot own them or bing them into the state. Also, all non-HBAR AR's are considered regulated firearms and you have to go through the same process you would as a handgun to buy one, 7-day wait and MSP application, and a "one gun a month" limit which applies to regulated firearms. Most "assault rifles" are considered regulated firearms too, i.e. FAL's, G1's & 3's, AR180, AK's, all treated the same. Paperwork to get them is no big deal, just an extra ten bucks and a pain in the ass waiting a week really. All MSP does is check you for local records as well as the standard NICS check. If I were you I would buy whatever I wanted while still a legal resident of VA before moving. Edit to add however there is no grandfathering for any "assault pistols" you may own, those you simply cannot bring into the state. There is no registration requirement for regular stuff you already own when you move in from out of state. Maryland also has a handgun roster of post-1984 handguns you can buy here, as well as a shell casing law for new handguns. Bottom line is, there are some modern handguns you can't get in the state because their manufacturers weren't willing to jump through Md.'s hoops to get on the roster. |
