I'm looking to sell one of my firearms but i'm not familiar with the procedures for selling a handgun. Is selling a handgun any differant than a long gun? My FFL to the buyer's FFL? Or is the procedure completely differant. Also, do I need to notify anyone that i've sold the handgun or just get some sort of receipt? Thanks. |

Hi Shogun- Important question - Are you looking to sell it within the state or outside of the state? Yes, it is different than a long gun for in state "secondary" transfers. No need to notify any organization but absolutely get a receipt or make one yourself when you sell it. In a nutshell: If you want to sell it in state, I can provide you details on how to do it via the MSP. No dealers and it will cost $10. If its out of state, then pretty much any firearm has to go through a FFL from our state to the buyers state and they will record the details needed. The ATF regulates all intrastate firearms transfers. Of course, out of state sales will require (more than likely) two transfer fees from the dealers (one for you and one for the buyer) plus overnight shipping. Note that the buyer would obviously have to adhere to any local or state regulations after it gets out of your hands. Don't forget to add shipping to your cost if you sell out of state. Handguns have to go overnight. Chris |
