my wife and i are planning a trip to DC, and were woundering were to stay in Maryland that we could walk to the Metro. we want an economical and safe place to stay. any advice or help is appreciated- thanks brian |
"economical and safe" do not go together in MD if you want to walk to the metro. Greenbelt Marriott = about +1 mile walk to metro station. Marriott You can also look in Wheaton or Rockville. I doubt they will be cheaper. I would ask if the have shuttle service to the stations if the are far away. |

Instead of the Metro, You could stay in a place in Maryland that is near the MARC. Some MARC lines has a couple of stops on the red line of the Metro and all of them end up at Union Station (where you can get onto the Metro). By doing that you can stay at a cheaper place a bit further out. I'd suggest this place in Dorsey, my parents stay there when they come to visit. It's just off Rt 1, I95, and Rt 100. (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-hotel-386771-best_western_baltimore_washington-i it's the Best Western BWI) It's also 5 minute drive from Arundle Mills Mall (one of those large 'upscale' outlet malls), or a 5-10 minutes walk to the Dorsey MARC station. $6 per person from the Dorsey Station to Union Station. One note the MARC only runs on weekdays, so if you want to use Metro on the weekend this is not an option (nearest Metro station is a 20 minute drive down I95 to the Greenbelt station) |

heres a thought, stay in down town baltimore city, the light rail run south to hook up with the marc train. on the week ends they are some great places to see here as well. you can litterly be 5 mins from the harbour and the light rail. and is baseball season orioles tickets are pretty cheap i know the holiday inn runs about 80 a night |

Bethesda on the Metro Red Line is good, lots of good places to eat. A little further out is the Twinbrook Doubletree on the Twinbrook stop. It's about 200 feet to the Metro. If you stay in DC, the Hyatt Regency on Capitol Hill is about a 5 min walk to either Union Station Metro or Judiciary Square Metro. From the Hyatt you can walk 3 blocks to the US Capitol and where mall begins (where Smithsonian, Washington monument, museum, etc) in about 10-15 minutes. You can find useful info at the metro site: http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm |

There's a few hotels very near the Twinbrook Metro on the Red line in MD, I think they're reasonably priced. Doubletree Hotel 1750 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 Tel: 301-468-1100 Fax: 301-468-0163 Toll-Free: 800-222-TREE www.doubletree.com Ramada Inn Rockville 1775 Rockville Pike Rockville, MD 20852 Tel: 301-881-2300 Fax: 301-881-9047 www.ramada.com |

NOWHERE in Prince George's County. hock.gif Bethesda +1 but its expensive. I like the BWI hotels idea as well. But it would mean driving to the metro. You'd be in a lot better position to see stuff in Baltimore too like the Orioles and the Inner Harbor. Courtyard by Marriott up off Nursery Road in Linthicum is nice and probably reasonable (for the area). |
Not if you stay in the hotel I mentioned. It's walking distance to the MARC, you just gotta leave by 8:30 or so and be back in Union Station by 7:30 or so on the weekdays (note Smithsonians close at 5:30 as do many of the attractions in DC - only the monuments are open later). On the weekend it's a 20 minute drive to the Greenbelt station (on the Green line) which has it's own exit/entrance ramps onto I95. Plus they seem to use the newest trains on the Green line. |
| The Gaithersburg Hilton is a little less expensive than many close in hotels. They are about a mile from the Shady Grove metro which is at the end of the red line. TGhey have a free shuttle service to the metro and any place you want to go within 5 miles. I've gotten rooms there for as little as $110 for visiting guests. That's about half the price of many hotels closer in. It's in a pretty good area too. Within walking distance is a large mall, many places to eat. |
He said economical!
