Got one!

I'm a little unclear on the regulations, though. While baiting while trapping is legal, is using offal/roadkill vermin/inedible deer parts legal to hunt over?

Must have missed it the first read-through.  With alot of luck I'll have deer heads/bones/hide to use for bait and hit the wolves 2nd weekend of deer season

I cut some nice big wolf tracks out grouse hunting last weekend. This is the first time I've ever hoped to see a wolf while deer hunting.

I've got mine in hand, but its not looking very promising.  We've had wolves on the property and adjacent county land for several years.  However, last weekend I decided to throw my blind up and call some, just to gauge potential interest in rabbit vs. fawn vs. mouse squeak, and threw in some woodpecker for good measure.

The screaming fawn did, indeed, provoke a response.  Unfortunately, the response was from the first coyote I've seen on that land.

Best of luck to all of you hunting wolves this year.  Looks like my season is over before it began.  On the plus side, I'll be on vacation for 9 consecutive days starting Friday!  I'll let you all know how the beer call performs after the sun sets!

you must be kidding. You tried 1 time calling and didnt see a wolf so now its over? I have a license for the late season, I plan on hunting hard (calling) all winter with the hopes of 1 decent shot. You wasted your money.

Not kidding at all.  From everything I've been able to research, coyotes and wolves are dang-near mutually exclusive.  Medium predators don't tend to stick around when big predators move in.  While coyotes generally can't/don't take deer sized game, wolves are fairly opportunistic and will consume both deer-sized game and smaller targets of opportunity.

I would love to be wrong.  I really would.  But I've been hunting varmints and coyotes for a few years(just 10 or so - I need to learn alot more). and would like to think I have a good understanding of their respective behaviors.

If you can show me I'm wrong, my hopes and dreams will be buoyed!  Syclone170 - let me know if I'm plain old incorrect on this.

Thanks

I wouldnt be discouraged by your results, hang in there. The people who actually score on a wolf will be extremely low and even lower in the next years after they know they are once again on the hit list. Wolves and coyotes do mingle territories, there is excellent coyote hunting in Canada. I would remain positive and bait them in your situation.

Thanks for the uplifting message.  You know, I hadn't really thought of Canada when I was worried about cohabitation.

Trapping season ended after a day for me. Pics to come. If I had put more than one trap in the area I could have taken out the entire pack.

Nice job on the wolf, Congrats.
None for me.
Our hunting land was pretty empty this year.
They are prepping the county land next to us for clear cutting this winter, scared most of the game out.
