| My daughter will be moving to Rochester in a couple months and we are looking for an apartment for her. Can anyone offer any suggestions or areas to avoid? The closer to the Mayo Clinic the better. Thanks. |

Although it looks like you have already made a choice, I thought I'd throw out a little more info. I grew up in the area and worked in Rochester for a while.
SE In general, I would avoid SE. There are some decent areas within the SE but they are too close to the problem ones. Central Avoid the housing areas a couple of blocks north and south of Center St from Broadway downtown out to about Hwy 52. One of my co-workers was renting in that Center St area and found evidence that someone had tampered with a window on one occasion. There are many deviants that lived in that area as well. NW NW is GTG as well as SW and the south end of town, which I would say at least south of 16th St. The problems up north were typically gang related. In general, the outlying areas of the city are better than the downtown/central area. If she is going to work at Mayo, they have a great shuttle service. So, she doesn't necessarily have to live close to Mayo. My Dad drove one of the shuttle buses to the outlying communities for a little while. Feel free to contact me if you have additional questions. I don't check in very often, so try and shoot me an email through the site. |

Thanks for the additional information. Her apartment is in the NW side. She was able to contact some of the 2nd year Mayo Residents and several of them are staying there and highly recommended it.
I just found out there is a Cabelas there so I cant wait to visit. |

Sounds like she found a place. Most likely have to commute by public transportation which Mayo provides as mentioned previously.
I will say Rochester is a great city by and large (usually near the top of one of the best places to live in the country and raise a family). Being from the cities (25yrs) and my wife from Rochester (23yrs), The North part of Rochester is a great part of town minus Northpark neighborhood due to gang activity but still very tame compared to the Twin Cities. My BIL and SIL live in NW Rochester a lot of young families with newer smaller homes, in-law parents live in NE Rochester which has bigger homes some older and newer. They wouldn't be living in those areas if they were bad as my FIL grew up in Rochester and knows the city very well. There is a nice outdoor range - Southern Minnesota Sportsman's Club down there too. Cheap membership. |
