Did you see it?

I was at My Aunt's house over in White Bear Lake and happened to see this orb looking fireball going across the sky.

No planes or anything like that. Looked to be about 7 to 8 thousand feet up and heading N/NE.

The vicinity was McKnight and County E.

Am I the first serious comment?

Go to Fireball reporting form to report your sighting. You will also be able to see if anyone else saw it.

The wife and I saw one last fall coming back from Ely, was pretty neat. Saw another one years ago as a kid when we were coming back from grouse hunting up by Effie. Looked like it was going to hit the road.

That's probably what it was. My neighbor across the street is from Argentina and he has a bunch of them. It's a balloon made out of really thin paper with a little fuel thing that hangs underneath that you light on fire. They float wherever the wind blows them and look creepy as heck if you don't know what it is.  They stop people dead in their tracks when they see them, even amidst all of the big $ fireworks going off. NeIghbor says they do them all the time for holidays, celebrations, etc in South American countries and they are constantly catching people's houses on fire - probably why they aren't legal here.

Pretty cool, though...

The modern version uses LEDs and a Battery. No fire, same effect, more color options.

Interesting, what keeps it in the air?  With the ones my neighbor has, the heated air keeps the balloon afloat...

My buddies and I saw something very similar last night.  Very strange.  This was moving way too fast for a balloon.
