Feb 21 at the Del-Tone-Luth Gun Club in St. Cloud there will be a mini 3-gun that will start at around 10:00 a.m.

This will be a good way to blow the dust off your weapons and get out of the house for a while.  Assistance earlier in the morning to get things set up is always welcome.

Pre-register or just show up?

Just show up.  I will try to be there at 0830 hrs. to help with setup so we can get started right at 1000 hrs.  If you haven't done this before and have questions, show up early and look me up.  You can learn a lot by helping with set up.  (seriously, I am not just trying to get extra hands for the labor).  Just stop at the clubhouse first to get a range pass.

If you have never shot competition before, this is a perfect way to get started.  These shoots are normally geared to be more of a "practice - get people started in 3-gun" type of environment.

To give early advice for weapons.  Make sure your guns work with your ammo.  Try to know your rifle zero out to 200 yrs.  Have 100 rounds of handgun, rifle and shotgun, as well as 10 slugs.  Trap loads work well for shotgun (like the Walmart Federal Value Packs).

Exactly what I am looking at.  Always wanted to get into 3-gun but haven't had much time till now.

What's the cost?

Entry fee was $10 last year, I assume the same this year. Ammo and gas is about the only other cost assuming you already have the guns and gear. Some people have extra guns and gear you might be able to barrow if you ask ahead of time.

I'm pretty sure it was $30 last time I went. I'm hoping to make this one.

If anyone needs a shotgun I would be willing to share mine! Just bring ammo!

My mistake, last time I remember paying $25. That was last summer though so it could be $30 now. I don't know why I said $10... I think my A.D.D. must have kicked in.

Sorry for the extremely stupid question but are spectators allowed/is there a decent place to watch? I would love to shoot a 3 gun(never have) but watching is the next best thing

To answer some of the questions:

Fee is around the $25.00 range depending on how many stages they can get set up due to weather/cold/snow etc.

Calibers = 9mm or larger for handgun, rifle is usually .223 but you can use larger and the .308 has a seperate division where you shoot against other .308 shooters scores.  Shotgun is 12ga or 20ga.  Bring 10 slugs just in case.  For the rest of the shotgun ammo regular trap loads work great.  Bring 100 rounds for each weapon and you will have ammo to take home.

You can come and spectate, just stop at the clubhouse and get a range pass first.  I am will to bet that after watching a couple of shooters on the first stage (or course of fire) you will be kicking yourself for not brining your guns and ammo.

They normally put on five courses of fire.  Two shotgun, one pistol, and the other two will have rifle/pistol/shotgun combinations.  Longest shots would be 200 yrds. for the rifle, but you might be forced to shoot from unusual positions.  Slings are not needed for rifle or shotgun.

Again, I will have a Glock 34 w/mags and pouches if someone needs a handgun.  I will have a spare semi-auto shotgun set up for 3-gun, and I can bring a scoped AR-15 if someone needs it.  Just let me know here or with a PM.  (supply your own ammo)

Equipment wise the best advice is to have a good secure holster, ability to have 3 pistol mags on your person (pockets work but are slower than mag pouches), ability to carry an extra rifle mag (back pockets work well), and the ability to carry 20 - 25 extra shotgun rounds on you (a lot of people use cargo pockets, or one of those pouches that trap shooters use to carry a box of shells.  A shell belt is another option but these all are slower than shell caddies)

There are normally a lot of new shooters that come to these so don't feel like the Lone Ranger.  The group of shooters that shows up will normally be split up into squads and each squad is headed by an experienced shooter that can offer hints, tips, suggestions etc.  Just listen to them when it comes to safety/rules etc..  For the new people, Big Jon (who puts these shoots on) also has a "New Shooter Orientation" meeting just prior to start of shooting.

See you on the range.

Almost forgot -

No steel ammo!  Steel shot for shotgun and steel core rifle ammo will damage the steel targets and has a greater risk of splashback for shooter and spectators.  If you aren't sure about your rifle ammo, take a magnet and hold it to the bullet, if it sticks you won't be using it on the steel rifle targets but it can be used on a course that has only paper targets for the rifle.

Big Jon put on another great shoot.  Several new shooters that did extremely well.  It was nice blowing the dust off of the weapons and start to get ready for the new shooting season.

Do you think they will be doing them 3rd Sunday each month until Tri-Gun? I cant remember if that was kind of the deal last year or not. If it was the same weekend every month it would be super easy to plan around.

You would have to ask Big Jon at Del-Tone.  I think they plan on one a month during the rest of the summer but not sure what weekend it will be.
