| Greetings from the sunny south. Seriously thinking about a major move to the great north. Have been spending two or three weeks every summer up there and just love it. Winter might be another story but you don't know unless you try. Anyway, in the police business here in GA. How is the outlook for jobs up there? Also from reading here you have gun laws? I somehow thought you would be like here and just an instant check unless you had a state permit. I like the north woods and the general lack of people. What is the real story. Do I want to move to MN? Thanks Moose |

keep driving and stop when you get to North Dakota, more jobs, more guns, more land. There is one part I disagree with... more jobs. I just moved out from ND and I'm glad I did! There are not more jobs. I've got a few friends still hanging on out there, but working crappy jobs they hate. in the LEO field, it might be different. Jon |

Well, here's my take. I moved here from Oregon in Feb. I am missing the mountains and ocean for sure! I do like the summer here, but being a city letter carrier..there have been a couple days so far this winter that have kicked my ass!! Right now is not so bad, but the sub-zero temp is for the birds! Hell, give it a shot. Up in northern MN is supposed to be real nice. Just don't show up with a lifted truck |

We're not looking to hot for jobs in northern MN. Our LE is understaffed as it is, and always among the first things to be cut.
The mining industry and construction industry have taken large hits, so a lot of those guys are taking whatever jobs they can get... the low paying jobs that college students, high schoolers, retirees, etc usually take. Environmental whackjobs are opposing new mining projects. A few mines recently brought back a few hundred workers. But there is still a lot of men out of work. Schools are being condensed in long term plans. Closing a lot of schools and building a few brand new schools. So now we can add teachers, janitors, and administrators to the mix. Because the mines are shipping less product, the railroads are using less staff and equipment, and so is the shipping industry at the port. Last I checked I think we were somewhere between 10-11% unemployment. But that doesn't include the "underemployment" as a lot of us are on reduced hours. Sunday's local newspaper was 8 1/2 pages of foreclosure notices, many mortgages for under 80k and a few years old. Northern MN is great! But before you move, I suggest having a job lined up. |
