For those who do the hunting lease thing....(Potlach or private)

What do these cost, and what are the terms?  Ie, a 40 acre parcel adjoining a State Forest with good deer and bear hunting?

What are the terms usually...ie, is it a 12 month lease or do you just get access during the hunting period?

i can only speak for ours...

a bunch of family / friends and i lease 234 acres of potlach land by Lake George /Hwy 71 west and Hwy 3 north  that has 1200 or so acres of county land behind it.

$ 1500 per year, maybe a bit more, maybe a bit less. cant recall.

we have the sole rights to it year round. we have a locked gate at the entrance and signs all around it posted no trespassing.  some of the locals do ATV and walk on our property but they leave it alone during deer season.  potlatch gets a key to the gate though and sometimes they log off a section, nothing we can do about that, and it doesnt really cause issues. we cant put any permanent structures on it, some guys bring campers, i just tent it during deer season.

some years have sucked there, but i think we finally figured out the best locations for all the stands. we had one hell of a year in 2008. it took a while to figure out where to set up, trial and error.

my buck, opening morning 2008,

my castle

meat rack ( not even the full group yet )

we got- my 10 pointer, 3 8 pointers, a small 10pter and a 13 pointer. i think a couple more bucks but those were after id left.

Those prices sound about right... It might be a bit cheaper right now.

Leases are becoming more popular.

As a site note ... Regarding potlatch taking logs, I would say that is very likely a GOOD thing. The DNR and Potlatch setup an agreement to take fallen trees that were tagged as fire hazards from some of the state parks a few years back. It was a win-win, as potlatch did the work that would have been huge overtime on the MN state budget.

Thus far, Minnesota has avoided bad forest fires due to a coordinated effort between the DNR, loggers, and (believe it or not) the greenies.

I gotta talk the little bro into getting a lease with me.  Then we wouldn't have to worry about inlaws and could bow hunt also.
