Can a WI resident buy a "sporting tactical" (ar etc) in mn provided they have a carry permit? I know I can buy long arms in general, but there has been some confusion at some gun stores I frequent. I'm still a little unclear on the whole sporting tactical mumbo jumbo. Any help would be greatly apprecitated. Thanks, Ben |
I can walk into a gander mt and buy rifles and shot guns as a WI resident. I know this for fact and have done it several times. I was wondering if sporting tacticals, as they are called, can be purchased by out of state residents in the same way any other long arm can be. The confusion seems to be that you have to present a purchase permit or a ccw permit to buy one, but there seems to be no discussion on residency. |

You can generally buy long guns from a state you are not a resident of, as long as the FFL you are buying from follows you home state's laws. What Ben is wondering is how MN's "assault weapons" laws fit into this. If he is a WI resident with a MN carry permit, can he buy long guns in MN that require the MN permit to purchase/carry? e.g. AR15s, AKs, etc. |
Once again, our friendly ATF FAQ has the answer
If you walk in to any Wal*Mart (that still sells guns) you will find a map hanging up highlighting all the residents of which states they can sell a gun to. Bass Pro Shops down in Missouri had one hanging up as well. Interestingly enough, they wouldn't sell to a Minnesota resident. I didn't bother asking, as they probably didn't know why. I'm still curious to know, though. |
Well, you sell AR15s at Gander Mountain in Duluth, MN, don't you? Would you sell him one? |

He asked me this the other day and I wasn't sure. Never run into this before because I've never talked to a customer from WI that had a MN permit.
Again, we're wondering about long guns that in MN have EXTRA requirements, like ARs and AKs. We know that WI residents can buy regular sporting long guns. However, it appears that the red text above says that as long as the buyer meets the requirements of BOTH states, he's good to go. WI resident, MN PTC, GTG? What are WI's laws regarding ARs? Are there any, or are they just the same as any other rifle? The only question it seems now is whether or not Gander Mt. policy allows it.

Doesn't GM have some sort of support department back at the mother ship to call and ask these sorts of questions? They must have a legal department... |
yes, but I've been off for three days. |
