Today Minnesota will be the first in the nation to try and put on the floor a bill that would give ALL  Minnesotans univeral health care. Everybody would be in it and you can pick who you go to. Saw it on 9 news last night.

I guess our state is trying to beat Hitlary/Osama to the punch.

Does this mean I wont have to pay $20 a week towards private health care anymore?

I'd happily pay $20 a week for my private healthcare. I however do not want to pay thousands more in taxes for every tom, dick and harry to get free coverage at my expense.

Nope - since you see fit to be gainfully employed you won't pay $20 per week for private health care.

You'll pay $125 for public health care - of course, that will help the folks that won't work... and move here from states that don't have all the freebies Minnesota does...and find out that, the more chilluns they whelp, the more money they get...

Work harder - thousands of welfare recipients are counting on you!

Minnesota has taught me that hard work is rewarded with more work.  This in turn has also taught me to do just enough to get by.  Terrible lessons of life I have learned.  There are no incentives in life to go above and beyond.  Everyone else around you gains but you...

I just did my taxes this weekend.  Seems like everyone has their hand out.

I was not "planning" on moving.  However, the idea keeps getting more solid with each passing day.  More work, more taxes, more illegals taking jobs...  English as a SECONDARY language???!!!  Oh, hell no!!

I like the change of seasons, but the warmer climates are looking pretty good to these old bones.  West Texas still tops my list...

Just because MN passes a law saying there must be UNIV. health care does not make it so.  Can you imagine the thousands of people who would need to be hired at the state level to run such a system?  Then, the private health care system would need a complete overhaul.  Good luck getting that past federal regulators.

Universal health care is a pipe dream concocted by liberals to try and win votes.  That is all.

I have been looking into South Dakota for about a year now. It sounds like an awesome state to live in. We homeschool and the homeschool laws are the best in the nation. Not to mention the gun laws. My wife works at home and the Army retired me so I can move anywhere and I actually like the snow and cool weather. We would actually like to begin the SD moving process as soon as May.Carry on!-------134thSIGNAL

I believe the US is the only major industrialized country in the world with out universal health care - socialism or good cents.

Pretty simple to me - get rid of the insurance companies, actively review and enforce doctor's perfomance and credentials standards, limit liability suits and you've just cut the cost of heathcare enought to bring everyone onboard and cut costs.

Fortunately the US does a lot of things differently than the rest of the world. Healthcare is broken, but more government is not the solution.

You missed the key components. Government intervention.

Much of the rising cost is due to the shifting of cost centers onto paying customers. Medicare/Medicaid don't cover/reimburse all the costs of many (most) procedures.

In addition, government mandates all people get seen even if they can't pay. Guess who pays? All of us. Paying (insured) patients have to cover those that can't or won't pay.

Government caused this problem, more government intervention will not solve the problems with the costs of health care. In fact, more government will result in shortages and rationing of care. The proof is available from all countries with socialized medicine.

Guys,

I am a dental student at the U of MN.  I couldn't agree more with those who think that UHC will wreak havoc on our medical systems, tax system, not to mention my potential income.  I have been struggling over where I will practice, and the more I look around me, the more I think another state would just be smarter.

If I did set up shop here in MN, and they sociallized dentistry, I swear to God that I will not work (not more than 1 day a week).  And then I will leave the state.  There are a lot of dentists who feel this way.

I figure they will socialize medicine first, with dentistry coming next.  This is a bad sign to me.

FWIW, New Zealand has Socialized Medicine but NOT socialized Dentistry.

The reason is clear, the issue is about power, not health.  More power is to be had manipulating non-dental medicine.

Any idea how many kids in MN don't get dental care ?

In spite of the hardship and demanding course work all medical and dental education is heavily subsidized (>50%) by the tax payer.

So here is the question - how much money should a doctor or dentist make and how much wealth do they need to acquire ?

is $200K enough to live on, is $3-5M in net worth enough to carry you through ?

I will say one good thing for both doctors and dentist - at least they work for their money which is better than most of the CEO's in this country - heard today that the CEO of Merrill Lynch left with $180M after he ran the company stock to 1/2 its value.

Enough rant - I suggest you watch Sicko - even if 90% is B.S. the 10% still asks
questions that deserve answers.

They "should" make about as much as the market is willing to pay them.  As for how much wealth they "need" to acquire, I'll defer to their judgment on that, as they know better than you or I what their optimal level of wealth accumulation is.

Also, if you want to play the "how much do you need" game, I'll ask if you really "need" the computer you typed your message on... after all, you could sell it and use the proceeds to feed the starving children.  Carried out to its logical conclusion, you really only "need" rough gruel, sackcloth clothing, and communal housing to live.  Why not reduce everyones' standard of living to that level?  People who play the "how much do you need game" tend to ignore their own luxuries while criticizing those of others.  They try to steal away the possessions of everyone who has a dollar more than them while forgetting that everyone with a dollar less than them is getting ready to do the same thing.

As for the Merrill Lynch guy, what's your beef?  Are you a shareholder?  If not, who cares?  It's not like the CEO drove the value of YOUR stock down, and if you are a shareholder, you can either sell your position, or go get yourself a lawyer and file a derivative suit.  Or if you're just a customer who's pissed off at their labor practices, you can take your business elsewhere. The market provides you with quite a few methods of redress.

No such thing. Despotism and socialism are incompatible with an armed population that would overthrow them.

Government will never fix the percieved market peturbations you describe (and over dramatize with hyperbole).  In fact, government intervention will make things worse by causing shortages and rationing.

I recommend you read the book Freedomnomics by Dr. John Lott.  It won't contain all the answers but will give you insight on your logical errors regarding economics, and corporations.  If you cannot afford the book, let me know, I'll buy you a copy and send it to you.

For all you that think docs are over paid, think again.......they come out with a lot of debt!  You fail to give docs or dds credit for surviving 4yrs of undergrad, 4 yrs of medical school or 3 yrs of dental school plus any residencies and perhaps a fellowship.
Oh yeah getting woke up in the middle of the night......there is a lot of glamor with that!  What about dealing with all the people that fail to take ownership in their problems! Did you see Bush wants to freeze Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement for providers for the next three years. Taxes aside what would you do if all of a sudden your boss said sorry you have to take a pay cut and do not expect a raise for the indeterminent future?  Man there are a lot of ills in the world.....but some of you better think again about the grand scheme of things.....you want someone that has some smarts when the chips are down.  You want places like HCMC, Regions, and North that have people ready to save you life when you are critically injured in a mishap.  You want those people at the top of their game ready to intervene.....you want places like Methodist, Southdale, ANW, United, St John's and The U with cath labs ready open your clogged coronary artery........

Think about having to deal with people who have less then stellar hygeine practices.  Or perhaps the you go in a see kid that brought in by parents that wreak of smoke and the poor kid has the same smell......What about people that have such McDonalds expectations of ER's?

Or the parents that are too cheap to go buy a bottle of Tylenol or motrin yet have carton of cigs in their bag or tricked out Ipod?

Oh there is a lot to the practice of medicine that most never see!  Way back when I had more patient care responsibility I was making a shade over min wage working 24 hr shifts along with uncompensated call time, now I work less and make a helluva lot more money........and have less responsibility......hell garbage collectors made more money then I did, did not work weekends, had plenty of holidays....but most of you do not work in fields that are 24/7/365

Just think about those Volunteer EMT out in Cottonwood that had to deal with dead and injured neighbors!  These people do it for free!  They take 140 hr EMT classes, plus boat load of CME plus retest every two years.  All forgiving back tor their communties!  Think of the Vollie Fire Dept.....that do the same thing all for nothing in return!

So, there are some people that practice their skill set of medicine for nothing but giving back to their commuties!
