do any stores carry the 511 pants in the metro area?  i want to try them on before i buy.  also, for those of you that have them, can they take a beating?  they seem to have a good rep, but i need pants that are very durable.

thanks,

Streichers in Plymouth has a good selection. I like the TDUs better.

I like my 5.11s but I don't think they are very durable.  I wear khakis to work (office) so the 5.11s don't look that out of place.  After 18 months or so, the pant leg cuffs are frayed and the pocket edges are starting to as well.  For comparison, my el cheapo Target special khaki pants are still in fine shape after much longer.  Each gets worn 2-3 days week.

The 5.11s are very comfortable and I like the pockets and their placements, I just don't think they are as durable as they should be for a 'premium' pant.  I'm going to get some tan BDU's and see how they hold up in comparison.

i have had good luck with the target specials also....actually that is what i am wearing in my avatar

which 5.11 do you have: cotton, nylon, TDU?

I'm looking for something that i can wear 5-7 days a week  and wash once a week, and stand up to the red soil of Africa....and hopefully last about a year (preferably 2 years).

a lady i worked with at the DNR had some BDUs that looked descent from BDU.com.  i need something that doesn't look too military.  I'm leaning towards the color brown....so they won't look too dirty, when dirty.

Did you look at some of the lighter colored Carhart work pants.  You can get them with the bdu type pockets and they have double knee's.  Also if you don't mind a jean.  Wangler came out with a great new work jean in plain, carpenter, or the kind with the bdu pockets. That are triple stiched and rivited, the pokets are lines with nylon so they dont wear out were the wallet goes or on the pocket corners.  Also where you clip your knife they have a leather tab sewn there so that doesn't wear either.  I am going to be buying these over the carhart jeans I wear to work from now on.  And they are only 29 bucks to boot!!  Much cheaper!

jeans are great for general construction/ industrial type work (i swear by the original Dickies) , but don't work all that well in hot/ humid environments.  jeans dry to slow...especially when it's monsoon season and you don't have electricity.  slow drying pants cause itch in places you don't want.

i have a pair of kevlar/nomex rip-stop BDUs that i wore fighting forest fires (these can take an unbelievable amount of torture/beating), but at $180 a pop they are a bit spendy....and a little too military looking.  I'm going to take a look at the TDU... I think they may be my best shot, and at $32 they won't break the bank.

Mine are 100% cotton.  Don't forget to look at Gander Mt and other local retailers for camping pants with zip-off legs.  Might be just the ticket in the jungle.  And good point about the drying time, I can see where that might be a big deal...

Good look, and sign me up for one of those lemurs  !

I believe mine (TDUs) are cotton ripstop and I love them, especially the built in knee-pad compartments.  5.11 has made the access holes a little larger so you can actually fit a hand inside to adjust the pad after washing, etc.  They also have elastic waistlines so a 35 will actually run from about 32-38.

I used to wear Proppers but for the same price I can get 5.11s from Streichers with knee-pads included.

I wear them daily and have had no durability issues although sitting on one's a$$ most of the time isn't hard on pants.

For the price you really can't go wrong I just wouldn't buy them in bulk until you know for sure.

well, last weekend i stopped at Streicher's and tried on quite a few pairs of pants.  i went with the 5.11 tactical.  i just didn't like how the TDU fit, but the tacticals i bought fit great!.  they even threw in a 5.11 knife......actually two.  my wife was looking at it while i was paying and she liked the knife, so the guy tossed one in for her.  service was very good/ friendly....I'll be buying more from them in the future.

Streichers has always had very good service each time I've gone there...

Been buying HydraShoks, HSTs, Hatch Gloves, Knives, and Freeze +P from them for nearly 10 years now...

ETA:  Never tried the 511 clothing yet though...
