It's a Military rifle, but does that count as a 'Fudd Gun' (sometimes I think it looks fuddish)?  Methinks my most fuddish is my 22.

It all depends on what you are shooting at

In zone #3 that's from Oct. 28 till Nov. 28, No rifles except on approved ranges. Probably one of the dumbest DNR regulations we've got!

This year I'm gonna resemble that remark...

I agree though...  I always hated that we couldn't go shooting much in the fall due to all the fudds hitting the woods.  I remember growing up hearing them blast off a string of 3 to 5 shots in the distance when they're trying to get a deer.  I always thought, "Jeez, these guys must SUCK if they can't hit a deer with 5 shots!"

If I can't get a decent shot with decent hit placement, I'm just not going to fire...  Not keep shooting until I may luckily hit something!

Builttouch, Glad to hear you got your M1 fixed & running!

I'm gonna do the old 'fuddism' range trip where I'll only shot off 10rds to double check my zero at Bills indoor range...  Not so much because I want to be a fudd, but because I want to triple-check my sights, and also because a good box of Norma hunting loads for 7.5mm Swiss cost about $40 to $45 for 20rds!

I'm hoping to soon buy some .308 bullet Federal bonded core / fusion bullets to load my own hunting rounds...  I usually use the GP-11 swiss surplus stuff for practice & fun shooting.  I've got just about everything I need to load my own 7.5 swiss, but no case trimmer yet (and the good electric ones are *EXPENSIVE* ).

Are you sure of the outdoor shooting ban? I looked for it in the hunting regs this year and didn't see it.

I'll be headed up Friday to check deer stands. Maybe I'll shoot one bigger than my kid this year!!

It's right in the middle of page #24. Not an "outdoor" ban. Just has to be an authorized target range.

LaRue SPR standard mount.

I went and sighted it in at the local club's range and I had a little explaining to do but nobody freaked out. The older gent who spotted me said he had read about the 6.8 being based off of the .30 Remington case and told me about the old days with his .30 Remington.

I got it sighted in with 11 rounds, dead on at 100 and took off since there were guys waiting for a bench.

Like it or not guys - the "Fuds" have you outnumbered - they control the fate of firearms in this state.

It may not be a super mall ninja caliber, with rails and lights and lasers and whatnot - but the Fuds aren't having any trouble getting ammo in their caliber...

And no one has tried to ban a lever action 30-30

Keep alienating them, making fun of them, and deriding their abilities - that's gonna get you far.

Who do think the gunmakers and ammo vendors target?  Can anyone honestly believe that there has been more R&D money spent on the AR platform than on the traditional "Fud" platforms?

The Fuds have numbers, they have money, and they are the future of gun rights.

Ignore them, then let me know how it is tricking out that tacticool milsurp...because thats all you will have left.

Flame away, non-believers, tinfoil hat wearers, and mall ninjas...

You're absolutely right.  Do you tacticool guys ever stop to think "I wonder who was preserving my gun rights long before I was born, let alone so damn tacticool?"

In case there's any question in your mind, it was the hunters, the guys that you so blithely call "Fudds."

Long after you guys have gone on to whatever is the next cool little hobby, the hunters will still be there defending the rights that you won't feel are relevant or practical any more.

For your benefit & that of the ENTIRE shooting community, I suggest that you discontinue using the term "Fudd."  It's obviously a derogatory term & does nothing to make you look any better.  At the same time it accomplishes just exactly what the anti-gunners want.  It divides us, thereby enabling them to make even more inroads against the entire shooting community, Fudds & tacticool.

Now back to your regularly scheduled program:

Good luck deer hunters!

Im sorry to the OP I used to love to hunt have not done so since my hunting partner (cousin) died several years ago.

rifleman nice deer your son got! How is that M1a mount working out on your deer slayer?

Matt you have used the swiss rifle before hunting or will it be new to you?

[#25]
Sorry to hear about your cousin, Death451!

Yeah, I've shot about 150rds through it total since I bought it...  If it's not perfectly on target, I know it's pretty darn close...  I made the mistake of shooting it like I do my other guns.  Semi-rapid fire.  With a steel buttplate and the recoil it beats my shoulder tender and then I'm not very good with shot placement after about 25 rds.

That's when my groups go bad.  Otherwise I can keep them within ~1" at 50yds at Bills North.  I'll try my luck at ~100yds on my relative's land to see what my rifle can do...  The irons work pretty good, and the 2-stage trigger is Sweeeeeeet on these rifles though.  I'm confident I can hit a deer with it, but I just want to practice a little & add to that confidence this weekend.

I still need to pick up a decen knife for cleaning the deer...

I have used a cold steel SRK for years then when you are done it will fit right in to the tactical gear also.(duel purpose)

yeah i was just thinking today about knives- a brand new smith and wesson swat knife i carry just doesnt do the trick... it cuts everything i need it to, just isnt worth a shit for gutting deer for some reason. so ill be knife shopping before next weekend.

well i went to oakdale gun club today, busted out the M1 and the M1A

the garand was a bitch today, due to my vision but i had many shots that would stop a deer RFN at 100 yards. kept all of them in the center mass of the target, once i got it dialed in for the new bullets. i solved the problem with the early clip ejection, it WAS the spring. so thats nice to have fixed.

the M1A did pretty good, after putting the new synthetic stock on ( took the wood off ) it threw the zero off, about a foot low! got it dialed in, and had them strattling the bullseye at the end of the day. decent groups.

Actually a lever action that holds more than 15 rounds would be considered an assualt weapon under the ban.  So there goes the .22 lever action being they hold 15 rounds

I took my "old deer slayer" to the range to see if it was still working right. The gun worked but, my shooting was for crap, plus I was in a rush.

I will take her back to the range next week for the final sight in. We have a little more time in WI until the deer opener in WI.

went to cabelas, talking to the guy at the knife counter, he sharpened it up for free. ive had these knives for a while, had one for two years until i lost it. some reason though one of the larger size swat knives, brand new, wouldnt gut a deer for shit. maybe ill have better luck this year, now that this one has a new edge to it.

I have been happy with the cheapo CRKT M-16 knives for $36 does a great job on deer.  Only thing I dislike are the holes in the handle which collect blood, fat, and hair.

Got my drive gun all zeroed in and stumbled on a pair of yodel dogs. recognize the rifle F250?

As for gutting deer any knife with a decent edge will do, just DON'T cut hair!! I used to be part of a metro deer management program and I cleaned approx 200 deer a year with a pair of cheap knives. a 4" fixed blade buck and a 3" old schrade drop point.

If you dont cut hair your knife will stay sharp, also you dont really need to go thru any bone unless it's warm and you want to spread the rib cage to cool the meat.

Using a Savage Striker .243 this year.

As for a knife, I use a cheap changable blade box cutter type utility knife.  Cabelas now has one with guthook type changable blades on sale for $14.99.  When one blade gets dull, change into a new one.  Not very tacticool though.
