I just got a call from the sherriff... Informing me you have to be 18 to get the permit to purchase, but 21 to buy an assault rifle... I looked up the laws before I even went there to get the permit, and the forum even said 18 to purchase an assault rifle... What can I do? Should I call them and tell them I know the law is 18+ ??

BTW this is Washington County's office in Stillwater.

Washington County Sherriff is kind of a dick.  Just ask some of the members here...  He's pretty anti-2nd amendment, and in protest of the CCW permit issuance too.

Do you know if it's really 21 to purchase an "assault rifle"? Everything I read says 18, also local gun shops... why is the sheriffs department telling me different?

Sorry to do a double post, but I have some more questions.

I stopped at arma-fire in blane, the man informed me I need a permit to purchase to buy a post-ban AR-15...

I stopped at The Wolf Den in hugo, and the man told me you DONT need a permit to buy a post-ban AR-15, only for a pre-ban.

I'm pretty sure they can't make "assualt rifles" anymore and the man at The Wolf Den was correct... The problem is the wolf den never has any ar-15's in stock, but arma-fire has them. Should I bring a copy of the law to arma-fire for him to see he is wrong?

What classifys them as assualt rifles? Isn't it the "evil" features? Such as folding stock, bayonet, etc? So why would it be classified as an "assualt rifle" if it's post-ban without those features? The man at wolf den said it was a target rifle now, because of the ban thats how it's classified.

I think it is 21 to buy 18 to own.

I'm looking up the laws for you.

Firearms:

Semiautomatic military-style assault weapons; defined
www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/stats/624/712.html

some ownership:
www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us/stats/624/713.html

IIRC you also have to be 21 to purchase a handgun,  so if you aren't 21 yet,  you cannot have the required permit to purchase needed for a "Semiautomatic military-style assault weapons".  Although over 18 you can own one,  just not buy from a gunshop.

Go to a gunshow or store in So.Dak, No. Dak, or Iowa and buy a AR.
You only have to be 18+ and not a criminal.  Transfers as any other rifle.

I purchased my first AR at a Sioux Falls gun show in 1997 when I was 19.

BTW; the MN law "21 to buy a AR/assualt rifle" is bull shit.

When you are 18+ y/o a rifle is a rifle, thats why I suggested a days drive to ND, SD or even the cheesehead state.

So it's 21 in minnesota? But I can drive 20 minutes to cheeseland + 10 to a shop and get one? Anyone know a gunshop I can go to on saturday that has them over the boarder?

I handle the Permits to Purchase for our dept.  Unless I'm wrong, you don't have to be 21 tp purchase a post-ban, which is minus those menacing evil features.

On page 3 of the App. it says,
Must be at least 18 years old to acquire or possess a handgun or semiautomatic military style assault weapons, but under federal law must be at least 21 years old to acquire handguns from licensed dealers

Check out subd 9 if you have any problems.

If you find a good dealer, just order one through them.  I haven't heard much good about Armored Fire.
