I recently received the following survey from 6th District Congressman Andy Barr:

Sixth District Survey

Dear Friend,

As you know, I have always been a strong supporter of the Second Amendment.  Please take a moment to complete the brief survey included in this e-mail so I will have a better idea of where you stand on this important issue.

Do you support further federal gun control restrictions including the banning of specific firearms, ammunitions, and/or accessories?

Yes
No
Unsure

Do you support federal legislation to require universal background checks when purchasing firearms?

Yes
No
Unsure

What is your opinion of the Second Amendment?

It should be preserved, but with modifications
It is no longer relevant and should be repealed
Unsure

As you can see.... the answer options for the last question leave something to be desired.  I responded via Mr. Barr's website with the following:

Dear Congressman Barr,
I recently received a quick survey from you concerning the subject of gun control. I want to say that I appreciate the support that you have shown gun owners on this critical matter, and hope you will continue to stay strong in this area.

I do have concerns about this recent survey. The third question asks "What is your opinion of the Second Amendment", and the only response options are "It should be preserved, but with modifications", "It is no longer relevant and should be repealed", and "Unsure". To borrow an all-to-often spoken line from our president, "Let me be clear". I believe the Second Amendment is just fine the way it is, unless it needs even MORE clarification to strengthen the fact that it GUARANTEES our right to keep and bear arms, and SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. The wording of your survey concerns me because I can see where the results could be twisted to say "my constituents overwhelmingly support modification of the Second Amendment" when that is likely NOT what a person selecting the first option means.

Please consider redistributing this survey with answers that leave less room for interpretation.

Thank you again for your support!

6th District Kentuckians should consider voicing a similar response to this survey!  You can contact him via a form on his website here: https://barr.house.gov/contact/email-me

I just emailed him this.

I completed your firearms survey but I was not happy that the only choices for the "what is your opinion of the Second Amendment" question were "It should be preserved, but with modifications " and "It is no longer relevant and should be repealed".  Where is the option for "It should be preserved as is"?  With the inventions of the internet and cellphones are working to modify the first amendment as well?  Your survey seems to miss the entire point of the Second Amendment and that is rather disappointing.  The bill of rights should not be modified and I'm not sure what to make you only giving the choice of either modifying or eliminating one of our rights.  Perhaps it was a mistake to vote for you because that type of thinking does not represent me at all.

I do not support any additional gun control, background check changes, registration changes, magazine capacity limits, waiting periods....none of that.  The people leading the anti-gun movement all over the country have shown their hand this year by banning firearms, registering firearms, proposing legislation to confiscate firearms, proposing legislation to have
the sheriff inspect the homes of gun owners and so on.  The existing laws are not being enforced, only a tiny percentage of the people who currently fail the background check as a prohibited person are even prosecuted.  These people are known bad guys, they were caught trying to buy a guy, and yet no one bothers to follow up and prosecute them.  Until steps are taken to actually enforce the existing gun laws I will not support any type of gun control.

Well the emails must have worked, I was in the middle of writing him a message similar to what you guys have said above about the last question.  Before I could hit send I got a "corrected" version with the last question:

What is your opinion of the Second Amendment? *Previous version inadvertently left off the first line
It should be preserved without modification
It should be preserved, but with modifications
It is no longer relevant and should be repealed
Unsure

I came here to post about the updated survey as well.  Guess we were heard.  Even if he was anti-gun a fair poll question would have included keeping the 2nd with no changes.  Hopefully it was just an oversight on someone's part.

I received a message from Mr. Barr's assistant on Facebook not long after sending my note and also commenting about it on the League of Kentucky Sportsmen page.  She took responsibility for the missing option and promised to send out an updated survey right away (which she obviously did).  Kudos to her for owning up to the mistake, responding quickly, and taking corrective action.

That's old.  They gerrymandered it to give Chandler a job with the heavily Democrat Bath and Fleming counties.

This is good. I'm pleased it wasn't some asinine push poll.

It's also good that Mr. Barr has people in his office with the smarts and authority to fix mistakes.
