You will need to know what amp service you have to the house that is if you plan on powering the whole place off the generator.

watts(P) is voltage in volts (E) times Current in amps(I).

P=E*I

Hope this helps..

You can go here for a general idea of what you need

http://www.generac.com/Residential/Sizer/

You will also want to know what size service you have (200 or 400amp) to help determine what type of transfer switch you need.  I would reccomend, natural gas or propane and an automatic transfer in case of service lost.

You can do exactly as you are thinking or you can just put a box in line with your main breaker box just for connecting a generator. You can then use a portable generator to run some percentage of your house. These boxes are kinda pricey but they make it very simple to have backup power.

A 5000 watt generator will run quite a bit for a few days (esp if you have gas heat/stove/water heater).
