Patrick? Not by any chance the Patrick that used to work at Evan's back in the late 90's and then went to work for some pawn is it? My friends and I always liked dealing with that guy, so just curious. |
| +1 to mickey. I was trying to find a Walther handgun and he had a great price, but with no local pickup, he had to ship the gun. Add in the cost of shipping, tax and then the transfer fee ... well I was better off buying elsewhere. Out of state good to go, but he would not deal with me at all for a local pickup so I went elsewhere. |
That's him. Red hair, former Marine. He also worked at Bud's in Paris for a while too. |
Well I'll be, that's pretty cool. I'm glad he's doing well then, he was the ONLY nice guy in the gun business in this town back when he was at Evans. Once he left Evans, my friends and I stopped going there pretty quick. We had a lot of good conversations with Patrick, too bad he's mostly just dealing with out of towners now. Looking at everything on Gunbroker, he's a got a nice selection of stuff! |

My guess is he is just drop shipping. I would bet he has little to no inventory at his "shop" and that is why he doesn't want to do local pick-ups. If that is what is happening, then he is having to pay shipping to his store for a local guy then try to do the transfer and such. Makes sense to do business that way with a low overhead, but your profit margins on guns can sometimes be lost. Example ... Falling dollar is making imports of certain guns higher. Gun cost today approx $600 and he has to sell at $650 for profit. If he bought the gun 3-4 months ago and has it in his shop his cost would have been $575. He could then sell at market value for an extra $25 profit. Problem for us KY guys is risk. If his business is drop shipment as I suspect, it is much less risk since he could stop tomorrow and have no inventory he has to sell (i.e. be stuck with). I know two guys who follow this business model and it works for them as a side business, but they don't even come close the listings and such of discountgunner. I wish him well, but it sucks for me. |
