Alot of people over look it, even though they are at their washer once a week or more. I check mine when I remember and tonight it may have saved me a huge headache. I went to put a load of laundry in and noticed the line had ballooned out. I poked at it and sure enough it sprung a pin hole leak. Surprisingly enough it was the cold water line, this is something I would expect from a hot water line. After further inspection the hot water line was the same way at the washer connection.

You should also check sinks, dishwashers etc. All these lines are recommended to be replaced every 5 years.

New Watts "flood safe" lines. They have a disconnect built in so if line burst and they get too much pressure going through the line it shuts off. I have never used these before so we will see if they work.

Sorry but I couldn't get this to flip back.

Do you not shut off the main valve when you aren't doing laundry?

...you know, the one that says to turn off when not in use?

Yep replace all black rubber hoses with braided hoses for added security.  Always smart to close those valves when you go on vacation too.

Ya, i did most of them when we moved in but the washer lines werent a priority...today they were. I always shut the main off to the house if we leave for more than the day.

My neighbor lost her house to a blown washer line. It let go while she was away, flooded the finished basement. Mold propagated up the walls from shoddy clean up crew attempts and the electrical went to shit. Insurance fucked her around for a while and she lived in hotels and then her car after they stopped cutting checks.

Washer hose failure escalated quickly!

ETA: To sweeten the experience someone later broke in and cut all the copper pipes out once the house looked unoccupied.

I use the braided lines with lifetime guarantee. I like these new Watts ones. I will look into them.

When nobody is home for more than a day I shut the water main off. Figure if I have a burst hose or pipe the damage will be limited to what is i the pipes.

Cleaned out about 60 square feet of soaked insulation today. What a mess

It was absolutely nasty. Lucky I found the exposed pipe and insulated it and stuffed a ton of new insulation in the eve where the pipe popped in the first place. I guess the I should be happy it didn't do anything other then this amount of damage .

I use fail safe washer lines.    Should one fail, the water flow gets shut off.  I use them for the sinks and toliet too.

I bought a new washer / dryer when I moved into my house about 7 months ago. Purchased the pair from Best Buy as they were having a huge sale, and I got the 0% financing on my Best Buy card.

They said it was mandatory to purchase new water lines and a new dryer vent pipe when they install (not that it matters, as I had no lines to begin with, old home-owners took the washer, dryer, plugs etc.). This was to prevent any issues from installing with old equipment.

I could have gotten the regular black hoses like the OP had, but I paid a little extra and got the stainless braided lines.

In the end, do you plan to install some hydronic antifreeze into that heating system?

In his situation, he really doesn't need glycol.  He just has to keep his heat on even when he's using the wood stove

Seeing as a wood stove is his primary heat source glycol would help.

True.  I really only put glycol in systems that really need it.  Where pipes are run through unconditioned space, or when no one lives in the house mainly.
While that pipe does run in an unconditioned overhang, it's so short that if the zone is just kept at a reasonable temp(maybe like 62) it (should) be fine.

wouldn't running the cir. pump do the job?

Could he use that new(er) RV antifreeze that is "environmentally safe" in his lines? Just incase of an accidental spill or burst?

It would but alot of people with alternate heating sources don't think of it.

If the pipe was installed properly and the overhang insulated correctly then the pipe would be inside the building envelope. This way as long as the house is above freezing the pipe will be above freezing.

Anything else is just treating the symptom not the disease.
