I have this idea and I am in need of a toolmaker or machinist. I can do small single parts myself but I want to make a batch run.

I have a headspace gauge I want to copy and make a bunch to sell.

Anyone here can help?

Why you want to make headspace gauges when they are readily avialable?

A very good question. I have one of the "unicorn" military headspace gauges for 5.56 that does not require disassembly of the bolt. I want to have some made and sell them.

I need to find someone who can make an exact copy and spit out a hundred or two.

You mean the ones with the notch in the base to accommodate the ejector?  Available for $32.50 from Grandmasters L.L.C.

http://powercustom.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1073

Hope you can get your custom-made ones made for about $15 each or you're not going to sell many.

Neat idea but I'd also worry about infringing on a patented design unless your design would be different enough to qualify as unique.  I had a buddy who restored Jags and could not find any special bolts to hold the bumpers on his restorations.  They simply were not being made anymore and no one had any to sell. So, using his machinery, he simply made them. They worked fantastic: perfect reproductions so he also made a few more to sell at a swap meet.  Jag sent him a letter telling him to cease and desist as he was violating their patent.  Just saying that someone's proprietary idea shouldn't be copied for making sales.

Rome,

I did some digging and for two reasons I have abandoned my idea.

1st is my look would have to be different and not an exact copy. No,issue really.

2nd is I would have a few grand invested to maybe make $1000 .

I mainly wanted to do it because I think there is a need and wanted to help guys get one of these. However the work, and investment to get this done is not feasible to me.

I have decided to either keep it or sell this one for a tidy profit and buy the Colt gauge. I can chuck this in a lathe and modify it to my needs.

Over the years a number of times I I thought I had a great idea for this jig or that jig and had even prototyped them and submitted them to a company I knew that was looking for them only to receive the nice letter thanking me for my effort but don't call us........   It's frustrating because I know that there are other cabinetmakers out there who would benefit from them.  Oh well.  I'll just have to leave my mark another way.  Chat with me about your project the next time we meet up!
