| I'm about to pull the trigger on an expensive house in Colchester. I have 4 kids in elementary school. Anyone know the town. Opinion on schools? I'd have 4 + acres with nothing for 1.5 -2 miles behind. Shooting range? |
|
I don't know anything about the schools, but as far as a home shooting range goes - one of the guys in my Jeep club had a place with around an acre of land, backed up by some woods. He set up a good back stop and shat all the time. He was blasting away with my 7.62x39 AR when the resident trooper stopped by due to a neighbor complaint. The trooper checked to make sure the back stop was adequate and there were no houses beyond. He just said to make sure not to start before 9AM and be done shooting by night fall for noise. Then he asked about the rifle and asked if he could fire a few rounds |

Nice town. Really good community. If I could work from home, I'd had picked it over Colmbia.
It has a small trashy/hillbilly area. For some reason, a lot of people think that Colchester is some dirt town. It's not. Far from it. The town green is beautiful and there are a ton of activities. No lack of public or private investment in infrastructure, people, residences, or businesses. If anything, it is too successful recently. But the growth has not become overbearing or a future burden like you would encounter in Glastonbury, South Windsor, or West Hartford. Good eats.....Illianos, Plum Tomato, Harry's Place, Gung Ho, Several small cafe's and eateries. Farm stands, bakeries, farmers markets, etc. Salem contains even more. You are from the area, so you should have a decent idea here. The entire town is run by two families. Some serious Boss Hoss shit under the surface. But most people would never realize it, yourself included. No different than a lot of other smaller towns. Shooting is fine in that area provided you are safe, courteous, and have appropriate runout. Lots of people shoot and hunt on their land. Several people even fly their own aircraft out of their property there. Groceries will go up quite a bit. There was a recent study done by one of the consumer groups, and Colchester has the highest grocery prices in the state. Other commodities will be comparable to rest of state. Just plan ahead and do BJ's/Sam's/Wal mart trips for the basics and you'll notice this less. Plenty of retail and municipal services. There is not a resident trooper. There is a small town police department that is supervised by the state police. Troop C is in town also. They handle my NFA signoffs fine. Not much feedback on schools. Have heard they are very good. I think your kids will have access to RHAM and Bacon Acadamy. Both have excellent reputations. |

Is there a mitigation system for radon in your water? yep 2 miles from mohegan. we have a system for the water. the well pump pumps water into a 75 gallon tank, then there is a large aerator similar to a fish tank which takes the radon from the water and then a fan vents the air out of the tank to outside. |

nah, i didnt put it in, and i didnt pay for it either. our house was a short sale and the offer they accepted was to give us this water system and a new roof. if they didnt we wouldn't have bough it and the house would have went to foreclosure the following week.

My wife isn't as woodsy as me, and has a little fear of being alone out there. However, the house has a great security system and will be stocked with plenty of things that go bang. When we toured the house, I immediately spotted a Sig-Sauer box in one of the closets. lol. The current owner is a gun guy. |
| Serious shooter here from cato corner area. I,ve been blasting away out back for 15 years. Never had the cops come once. Some weekends it sounds like there is a war going on. Cops in town are pretty good. State trooper in charge is pro 2nd amend., no problem with NFA paperwork. School system is pretty good. Had 3 go through the school system with only a few problems. Taxes still pretty reasonable. Ground water quality sucks.. Traffic gets worse every year. |

Troop K in Colchester. It is a very nice town. Radon can be found in any home in CT. Worth getting a test. |

Colchester is a nice little town. My wife grew up there and we looked at houses there. We ended up just over the border in Lebanon cause we wanted a bit more country feel. I agree with the wet basements and radon comments. We have a radon mitigation system for our well. There are a ton of cops between townies and troop k but I have never been hassled. She says the schools are good and you have acess to NFA but have to provide your own transportation. I didn't know that but that's what she says.

Used to have a lot of farms, does it still?

Colchester high school aged students may also attend Norwich Tech, which is a state run Regional Vocational Technical High School. If I had a dime for every time I heard that someone never knew that type of working tradesman education was an available choice, until after it was too late to be accepted...
Based on the description of the house area, the reservoir may be behind you, and the water may have a sulphur smell, Let me know if you need help with that. |
