Evening Neigbhors to the west,

I am a RI resident and currently possess a valid RI CCW issued by my police chief.  Can anyone provide any info about how to obtain an out of state CCW in CT?

Thanks in advance,

From the DESPP website:

How do I get a permit to carry a gun in the State of Connecticut?

In order to get a State Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers you must first obtain a Local Permit. Out of state residents may apply for a non resident Connecticut State Pistol Permit. Non residents apply directly to the Connecticut State Police.  Call 860-685-8494 to have an application mailed out.

Sorry, have to go there...

There is no such thing as a "CCW permit" in CT. What we have is a "state permit to carry pistols and revolvers" The word "conceal" in not mentioned any where on it. Nor are there any state laws or statutes that mandate method of carry.

So does that "state permit to carry pistols and revolvers" allow you to just transport to range/competition/store? What does that permit allow?

Thank you for your time,

Yup.  It allows you to carry a pistol or revolver, concealed or open though I don't think many here would recommend open.  It also allows you to purchase ammo and guns both long and short.

Unfortunately, very true. The local PD can put up some pretty restrictive requirements that are not legal, but very challenging.

Non Residents actually have an easier process than many CT residents

So does that "state permit to carry pistols and revolvers" allow you to just transport to range/competition/store? What does that permit allow?

The permit allows you to do exactly what it says, carry pistols and revolvers in CT. You can carry them anywhere in CT so long as your not in a gun free zone (both signed and those specifically prohibited by statute/law). There is no such thing as a "CCW permit" in CT. The state does not mandate method of carry. You can open carry or conceal carry. More than a few people however will strongly suggest you conceal carry, while some others open carry with few issues.

CT Carry has an entire FAQ section dedicated to answering questions on carrying handguns in CT.

Non residents generally get issued the state pistol permit faster (within the statutory mandated 8 week time frame) than instate residents due to the local issuing authority's "suitability" requirement for instate residents. Even though the statutes state the permit application is supposed to be approved or denied within 8 weeks for instate residents, some of us have had to wait upwards of six months or more to be issued the temporary permit by our local issuing authority. Generally it is the larger Democratic run towns/cities that drag their feet intentionally when approving permits to instate residents. Non residents apply direct to DESPP (the state) where as in state residents have to apply to their local issuing authority. Non residents get issued a state permit, local residents get issued a temporary permit that they then have to show to get the state permit. For instate residents the process can cost upwards of $250.

The pistol permit will also allow you to buy ammunition and ammunition magazines (10 round magazines) in CT.
