I just started wondering, but can we buy a .22 conversion kit for our pre existing AR's anymore?

Yes.

A centerfire semiautomatic detachable magazine AR is (in most cases) already considered an "assault weapon". Buying a kit or using a kit in an assault weapon doesn't make it more or less assaulty.

Now if you had a dedicated .22LR AR with two evil features (or a full featured .22LR AR purchased between 4/4/13 and 6/18/13) and decided to change out the upper to a semiautomatic centerfire upper post 4/4/13 then you will run into legal issues. Just having a semiautomatic centerfire upper that can fit (and operate) on a .22LR AR lower will present possible legal issues.

Anyways....sbhaven....the issue I see is that the CMMG conversion kits come with new .22 mags that hold 25 rounds...or is that a part that slips into your existing mags?

I have a CMMG conversion kit, bought it when they first started to sell them a few years ago. The conversion kit itself isn't illegal, but the magazines that goes with it, if they hold over 10 rounds, would be illegal. They are actual magazines, not inserts or modifications of standard AR-15 magazines. In my case I have several of the Black Dog Machine 26 round magazines, one came with the kit and I purchased several more. If I decide to register my large capacity magazines then they too would be included since the large capacity magazine language does not exempt .22LR or any other calibers from "magazines". They do exempt certain tube magazine though.

What you'd have to do is see if CMMG or who ever is selling the conversion kit will ship just the conversion kit sans the large capacity magazine(s) or will substitute in a 10 round magazine(s) for the 25 round magazine(s). Otherwise one would be violating the law the minute they took possession of the 25 round magazines (unless they are one of the lucky few whom the law exempts).
