Subject:RE: Gun Control and Mental Health
From: "Rep. Rojas, Jason" <[email protected]> Date:Mon, Jan 14, 2013 10:37 pm Andrapos, Thanks for your email and my apologies for the delay. I appreciate your stand on these issues and I am keeping my mind open as the debate begins. I agree with many of your sentiments surrounding this issue and will keep them in mind as the debate moves along. I will say that my inclination is for stronger controls but am truly keeping an open mind as I hear from the people I represent. Thanks again and hope all is well. Jason ____________________ What I sent (on December 28th): I do not support any calls for a new assault weapons ban, a ban on ammunition magazines, or more restrictions on firearms transfers. Connecticut has some of the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, including a ban on assault weapons. Those laws did not matter to the murderer who committed the massacre in Sandy Hook. He willfully broke many of them. He stole firearms from his mother, murdered her, then unlawfully transported the firearms to the school, illegally brought them onto school grounds, forcibly entered the building, and systematically began murdering teachers and children. Instead of blaming the gun as the root of the problem we need to look our mentally ill and see how we can better help them. We do not need legislation for an "assault weapons ban" and we also do not need legislation for "tattle on so-and-so because they are different." What we need is legislation to ensure treatment for our mentally ill. What we need is legislation to improve the security of our schools and the other gun-free zones that have effectively become "target rich environments" for murderers. Please concentrate your efforts on those two issues. |
